GeoMod is a raster-based land change modeling tool in the GIS software TerrSet that simulates the gain or the loss of a land category over a specified time interval. [1] The model only simulates the spatial allocation of change between two land categories either forwards or backwards in time. [1] [2]
GeoMod simulates land change based on a combination of several input requirements. First, users must specify the beginning (time 1) and end time (time 2) for the temporal extent of the simulation and must identify a time step for the simulation. [2] The model also needs the image that depicts the two land categories (e.g. category 1= undeveloped and category 2=developed) at time and a projected quantity of the two categories at time 2. [1] GeoMod also needs a suitability map, which shows the transition suitability of each pixel. The higher values in the suitability map, the more suitable the pixel is for transition the gain of category 2. If the user does not have a suitability map, GeoMod can create one using one or more driver images. A driver image is a categorical image that indicates the distribution of a variable that is believed to influence the change of the land-cover categories. [3]
GeoMod can separate the analysis into strata, such as political units, and then simulate change independently within each stratum. [1] If the quantity of change from time 1 to time 2 indicates a net gain of category 2 in a particular stratum, then GeoMod assumes zero gross loss of category 2 during the simulation, meaning GeoMod does not simulate simultaneous gain and loss of an individual category within an individual stratum. GeoMod allocates change based on several user-defined decision rules, which are discussed in section 3.
In addition to the mandatory simulation inputs listed above, there are several additional optional data inputs. [2]
GeoMod can also analyze the environmental impact on the pixels that undergo change within a specified time interval. This optional feature requires an image showing the environmental resource of interest, an image showing the ratio of the potential impact to the environmental resource of interest, and an image showing the ratio of simulated impact to potential impact. [2] If the latter two images are not available, a fixed ratio for the entire study area may be used.
Decision rule 1 is mandatory and assumes a one-way change either forward or backwards in time within each stratum. The model determines which category experiences a net increase and then simulates gross gain in that category and zero gross loss of that category. [1] [2]
Decision rule 2 is optional and it concerns regional stratification. Rule 2 can allow for change from category 1 to category 2 in some strata and from category 2 to category 1 in other strata. When using regional stratification, the user has to specify the quantity for each category at time 2 in each stratum.
Decision rule 3 is also optional and it focuses on the neighborhood constraint. GeoMod can geographically limit the simulated change to pixels that are on the edge between category 1 and category 2. [4] The model can thus apply a user-defined minimum search width to constrain where simulated change occurs.
Decision rule 4 is also optional and concerns a suitability map. When simulating the transition from category 1 to category 2, GeoMod simulates change from the category 1 pixels that have the largest suitability values. [1]
Pattern validation shows how the simulated change compares to reference change, for cases where a reference map is available for validation. A visual approach makes use of the CROSSTAB module in TerrsSet by comparing three maps simultaneously: Reference time 1, Reference time 2, and Simulated time 2. [2] Additionally, the Total Operating Characteristic (TOC) curve may be used to compare the suitability map to a map of reference change. Terrset has a module called ROC, which can assist in the selection thresholds for the TOC. [5]
Geomod can be used to model land change in forest cover to assess the potential for future REDD+ projects. [6] [7] Modeling deforestation requires assessing appropriate calibration intervals, usually two thirds of a dataset that extrapolate out to future scenarios and have been validated using the final third of the dataset. The amount of change can be specified within the module and the allocation of change is determined by suitability driver maps. These maps are created based on user-selected datasets, such as distance to roads.
While typically used to simulate land change, Geomod can also be used to produce suitability maps for invasive species distribution. This subject is further discussed in a video on Finding Geographic Gradients with GEOMOD.
A geographic information system (GIS) consists of integrated computer hardware and software that store, manage, analyze, edit, output, and visualize geographic data. Much of this often happens within a spatial database; however, this is not essential to meet the definition of a GIS. In a broader sense, one may consider such a system also to include human users and support staff, procedures and workflows, the body of knowledge of relevant concepts and methods, and institutional organizations.

Downscaling is any procedure to infer high-resolution information from low-resolution variables. This technique is based on dynamical or statistical approaches commonly used in several disciplines, especially meteorology, climatology and remote sensing. The term downscaling usually refers to an increase in spatial resolution, but it is often also used for temporal resolution. This is not to be confused with image downscaling which is a process of reducing an image from a higher resolution to a lower resolution.
Map algebra is an algebra for manipulating geographic data, primarily fields. Developed by Dr. Dana Tomlin and others in the late 1970s, it is a set of primitive operations in a geographic information system (GIS) which allows one or more raster layers ("maps") of similar dimensions to produce a new raster layer (map) using mathematical or other operations such as addition, subtraction etc.
Integrated Land and Water Information System (ILWIS) is a geographic information system (GIS) and remote sensing software for both vector and raster processing. Its features include digitizing, editing, analysis and display of data, and production of quality maps. ILWIS was initially developed and distributed by ITC Enschede in the Netherlands for use by its researchers and students. Since 1 July 2007, it has been released as free software under the terms of the GPL-2.0-only license. Having been used by many students, teachers and researchers for more than two decades, ILWIS is one of the most user-friendly integrated vector and raster software programmes currently available. ILWIS has some very powerful raster analysis modules, a high-precision and flexible vector and point digitizing module, a variety of very practical tools, as well as a great variety of user guides and training modules all available for downloading. The current version is ILWIS 3.8.6. Similar to the GRASS GIS in many respects, ILWIS is currently available natively only on Microsoft Windows. However, a Linux Wine manual had been released in 2009 by the World Institute for Conservation and Environment (WICE).
Groundwater models are computer models of groundwater flow systems, and are used by hydrologists and hydrogeologists. Groundwater models are used to simulate and predict aquifer conditions.
SahysMod is a computer program for the prediction of the salinity of soil moisture, groundwater and drainage water, the depth of the watertable, and the drain discharge in irrigated agricultural lands, using different hydrogeologic and aquifer conditions, varying water management options, including the use of ground water for irrigation, and several crop rotation schedules, whereby the spatial variations are accounted for through a network of polygons.
TerrSet is an integrated geographic information system (GIS) and remote sensing software developed by Clark Labs at Clark University for the analysis and display of digital geospatial information. TerrSet is a PC grid-based system that offers tools for researchers and scientists engaged in analyzing earth system dynamics for effective and responsible decision making for environmental management, sustainable resource development and equitable resource allocation.
SaltMod is computer program for the prediction of the salinity of soil moisture, groundwater and drainage water, the depth of the watertable, and the drain discharge (hydrology) in irrigated agricultural lands, using different (geo)hydrologic conditions, varying water management options, including the use of ground water for irrigation, and several cropping rotation schedules. The water management options include irrigation, drainage, and the use of subsurface drainage water from pipe drains, ditches or wells for irrigation.
A 3D city model is digital model of urban areas that represent terrain surfaces, sites, buildings, vegetation, infrastructure and landscape elements in three-dimensional scale as well as related objects belonging to urban areas. Their components are described and represented by corresponding two- and three-dimensional spatial data and geo-referenced data. 3D city models support presentation, exploration, analysis, and management tasks in a large number of different application domains. In particular, 3D city models allow "for visually integrating heterogeneous geoinformation within a single framework and, therefore, create and manage complex urban information spaces."
The Water Erosion Prediction Project (WEPP) model is a physically based erosion simulation model built on the fundamentals of hydrology, plant science, hydraulics, and erosion mechanics. The model was developed by an interagency team of scientists to replace the Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE) and has been widely used in the United States and the world. WEPP requires four inputs, i.e., climate, topography, soil, and management (vegetation); and provides various types of outputs, including water balance, soil detachment and deposition at points along the slope, sediment delivery, and vegetation growth. The WEPP model has been improved continuously since its public delivery in 1995, and is applicable for a variety of areas.
EMIGMA is a geophysics interpretation software platform developed by Petros Eikon Incorporated for data processing, simulation, inversion and imaging as well as other associated tasks. The software focuses on non-seismic applications and operates only on the Windows operating system. It supports files standard to the industry, instrument native formats as well as files used by other software in the industry such as AutoCAD, Google Earth and Oasis montaj. There is a free version of EMIGMA called EMIGMA Basic developed to allow viewing of databases created by licensed users. It does not allow data simulation nor modeling nor data import. The software is utilized by geoscientists for exploration and delineating purposes in mining, oil and gas and groundwater as well as hydrologists, environmental engineers, archaeologists and academic institutions for research purposes. Principal contributors to the software are R. W. Groom, H. Wu, E. Vassilenko, R. Jia, C. Ottay and C. Alvarez.
The total operating characteristic (TOC) is a statistical method to compare a Boolean variable versus a rank variable. TOC can measure the ability of an index variable to diagnose either presence or absence of a characteristic. The diagnosis of presence or absence depends on whether the value of the index is above a threshold. TOC considers multiple possible thresholds. Each threshold generates a two-by-two contingency table, which contains four entries: hits, misses, false alarms, and correct rejections.
Land change models (LCMs) describe, project, and explain changes in and the dynamics of land use and land-cover. LCMs are a means of understanding ways that humans change the Earth's surface in the past, present, and future.
CLUE model is a spatially explicit land-use change model developed to simulate future land-use and land-cover changes, including urban expansion, deforestation, land abandonment, and agricultural intensification. CLUE model is a dynamic modeling framework which simulates land-use change based on quantification of biophysical and human drivers of land-use conversion. The CLUE model can be applied at the national and continental scale, implemented in Central America, Ecuador, China, and Java, Indonesia. CLUE model cannot be employed at regional level. Different versions of CLUE model include CLUE-S, CLUE-Scanner, and Dyna-CLUE models.
