Geoffrey Thompson FACSEP (born 1945) is an Australian sports physician who was a finalist in the 2020 Australian of the Year award, being named Northern Territory Australian of the Year.

Royal Australian Air Force and Flying Doctor service

He was called up to the Australian Defence Force in 1967, transferring soon to the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) because he had a pilot’s licence. He moved with his wife to Darwin in 1971. In 1974, when Cyclone Tracy hit Darwin, he assisted with the RAAF effort to evacuate the city as both pilot and doctor. [1]

Career as a sports physician

He was motivated to study to become a Sport and Exercise Medicine physician after studying under Kenneth H. Cooper at Dallas. [1]

He was the inaugural President of the Sports Medicine Australia (Northern Territory branch) [2] and was one of the Foundation Fellows of the Australasian College of Sport and Exercise Physicians.

He is Chief Medical Officer for the Australian Paralympic Committee. [3]

He is a member of the Australian Sports Drug Medical Advisory Committee Review Panel. [4]

He has a particular interest in advancing healthcare in indigenous athletes in the Northern Territory. [5]

Northern Territory Australian of the Year winner 2020

The Bombing of Darwin, also known as the Battle of Darwin, on 19 February 1942 was the largest single attack ever mounted by a foreign power on Australia. An author since 1989, Lewis worked as a high school teacher, and served as naval officer for 20 years, seeing active service in Baghdad during the Iraq war, and working in East Timor. In June 2003, Lewis was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia for meritorious service to the Royal Australian Navy, particularly in the promotion of Australian naval history.

He also represented Australia on the senior men's team, winning a gold medal with the side at the 2010 Commonwealth Games and the 2010 Men's Hockey Champions Trophy. He was part of the 2012 Olympic team that won the bronze medal.

Brian Thomas Manning was an Australian trade unionist and political activist. He was active in supporting the Gurindji Strike at Wave Hill, a pivotal event in the early Australian Aboriginal land-rights movement. He was also heavily involved in the campaign for an independent East Timor as well as the anti-racism movement and a number of other causes. He was a dedicated trade unionist, a Secretary of the Northern Territory branch of the Waterside Workers' Federation of Australia and a co-founder of the Northern Territory Trades and Labor Council.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Cyclone Marcus</span>

Severe Tropical Cyclone Marcus was a very powerful tropical cyclone that struck Australia's Northern Territory and the Kimberley region of Western Australia in March 2018. It was the strongest tropical cyclone of the 2017–18 Australian region cyclone season, as well as the strongest tropical cyclone in the Australian region basin since George in 2007. It was also considered the worst cyclone to hit Darwin since Tracy in 1974. It was also the strongest tropical cyclone since Tracy to hit Darwin, making landfall there as a Category 2 tropical cyclone. Marcus formed on March 14 from a tropical low situated over the northeast Timor Sea, which quickly moved southeast and strengthened into a tropical cyclone the next day.

Jaquelyne Hughes FRACP is a Torres Strait Islander woman and senior research fellow at Menzies School of Health Research, Charles Darwin University. She also works as a nephrologist at the Royal Darwin Hospital.

The Australasian College of Sport and Exercise Physicians (ACSEP) is a not-for-profit professional organisation responsible for training, educating, and representing over 350 doctors in Australia and New Zealand. These doctors practise medicine in the specialty of sport and exercise medicine (SEM). The ACSEP is the smallest of the 15 recognised specialist medical Colleges in Australia with approximately 260 Fellows and Registrars in 2020.

St John NT is funded through a combination of government funding, corporate and private donations and user pays services.

Hugh Crosbie Heggie is an Australian public servant and physician who is the 23rd and current administrator of the Northern Territory since 2 February 2023.
