George Barton (born 23 August 1934) is a former Australian rules footballer who played with Hawthorn in the Victorian Football League (VFL). [2]
Barton was born in Tawonga and started playing senior football for Tawonga in the Yackandandah & District Football League at 14. Barton was then recruited by Myrtleford in the Ovens & Murray Football League in 1955. [3]
After one season with Myrtleford, Hawthorn recruited Barton [4] and he made his senior VFL debut in round seven, 1956 against Fitzroy at Glenferrie Oval.
The Tallangatta & District Football League senior football best and fairest award was changed to the Barton Medal in 1977, after three times best and fairest winner, George Barton tragically passed away after a short battle with cancer. [5]
At the time of Barton's death, he was also a four time runner up in the Tallangatta & DFL best and fairest award between 1964 and 1970, where he originally polled the same number of votes as the winners, but finished second in the award to the player who polled the most three votes, on the countback system.
In 2016, the Tallangatta & District Football League retrospectively awarded the late George Barton, with an additional four Barton Medals, thus finishing up with an incredible seven T&DFL senior football best and fairest awards/Barton Medals.
