George Henry Gause, Jr. (died in 1986) was a mortician and politician from Florida. [1] He served as mayor of Bartow, Florida. [2] and also served as a commissioner. [3] He was an African American and was named as a Great Floridian. [4] He also served on the Polk County School Board. [5]
Gause's father was a naval architect and had a funeral home in Wilmington, North Carolina before moving to Florida for health reasons. [6] Gause Jr. went to Union Academy High School in Bartow.
He served two terms as Bartow's mayor [7] from 1971 to 1977.

There is a George H. Gause Elementary school located in Bartow, Florida, while two streets are named after him. The Martin Luther King Day celebration in Bartow honors him in its name. In 2002, he was inducted into the Polk County Public Schools Hall of Fame. [5]

John Leonard Swigert Jr. was an American NASA astronaut, test pilot, mechanical engineer, aerospace engineer, United States Air Force pilot, and politician. In April 1970, as command module pilot of Apollo 13, he became one of 24 astronauts who flew to the Moon. Ironically, due to the "slingshot" route around the Moon they chose to safely return to Earth, the Apollo 13 astronauts flew farther away from Earth than any other astronauts before or since, though they had to abort the Moon landing.
Spessard Lindsey Holland was an American lawyer and politician. He served as the 28th Governor of Florida from 1941 to 1945, and later as a US senator for Florida from 1946 to 1971. He was the first person born in Florida to serve as Governor and US Senator for the state. While serving as a US Senator he would notably introduce the 24th Amendment.

She was the first female president of a public institution of higher learning in Florida, the first female president of a Florida community college while president of Polk Community College aka Polk State College. She was one of the first female graduates of the School of Engineering at Vanderbilt University and the first woman to graduate with a degree in chemical engineering. She was also the first woman to receive an M.S. and a Ph.D. in engineering from the University of Florida. She also founded Society of Women Engineers chapters, and was an active board member.

Union Academy is a magnet middle school in Bartow, Florida. It dates to 1897 when it opened as an elementary school for African Americans. It was expanded to include a high school in 1923. The high school was merged into Summerlin Institute in 1969 following the desegregation era and its students became part of Bartow High School on the Summerlin campus. Union Academy became a Middle School.
Herbert Dixon is a former professional golfer on the African American during the segregation era. He is a member of the black players hall of fame.
Martha Lucy Rawlings Tootell was an American schoolteacher and politician who served in the Rhode Island House of Representatives. She represented District 52 from 1973 until 1977.
