Dr George Kerr born (22 April 1860 - ) was an Scottish tennis player and physician. He competed at the 1885 Wimbledon Championships. [2] He was a three time quarter finalist in the men's singles at the Scottish National Championships in 1886, 1888 and 1893. [1] He was a founding member of the Dyvours Lawn Tennis Club and later Scottish Lawn Tennis Association. [3] He was active from 1883 to 1894 contested 2 career finals. [1]

Career

George Kerr was born in Scotland on 22 April 1860 and educated at Edinburgh University. He was a member of the Edinburgh Dyvours Lawn Tennis Club and later Scottish Lawn Tennis Association. [4] He played his first singles tournament at the South of Scotland Championships at Moffat in 1883. [1] In major tournaments he took part in the men's singles at the 1885 Wimbledon Championships where he was defeated in the first round by Ireland's Ernest Browne. [5] He also played at the Northern Championships in 1887. [1]

He was active from 1883 to 1894 and was a three time quarter finalist in the men's singles at the Scottish National Championships in 1886, 1888 and 1893. [1] He contested only two career finals at the Fifeshire Championships in 1885 where he lost John Galbraith Horn, and the Galashiels Open in 1887 where he lost to England's Arthur Story in five sets. [1] He was also a semi finalist at the East of Scotland Championships and West of Scotland Championships both in 1887. [1] Kerr played his final known singles tournament in 1894 at the Whitehouse Open in Edinburgh. [1]

David Grainger Chaytor KC. was an Irish tennis player and later lawyer. In major tournaments of the time he was a singles quarter finalist at the 1890 Wimbledon Championships, a three time quarter finalist at the Irish Championships, and finalist at the 1887 Northern Championships. Between 1885 and 1900 he won 21 career titles.

Arthur Wellesley Hallward was an English tennis player active during the 19th century. His best results in major tournaments came at the 1893 Wimbledon Championships where he was a losing quarter finalist in the men' singles, and 1896 where he was a losing quarter finalist in the 1896 Men's doubles. Between 1882 and 1898 he contested 7 career singles finals, and won 2 titles.

Herbert Bowes-Lyon was a Scottish tennis player and barrister, and uncle of Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, mother of Queen Elizabeth II. He was a quarter finalist in the men's singles at the 1887 Wimbledon Championships, and a two time finalist at the Scottish Championships. Herbert played 8 consecutive seasons from 1882 to 1888, and won 8 singles titles.

Beatrice Draffen was a British tennis player from Ackworth, West Riding of Yorkshire, England active from 1884 to 1897. She was a two time semi finalist in the women's singles at the 1895 Wimbledon Championships and 1896 Wimbledon Championships. She won 10 career singles titles.

Richard Millar Thomson was a Scottish tennis player. He won the Scottish Championships in 1894, and was a quarter finalist at the Irish Championships in 1890. He was active from 1882 to 1907 and won 8 career singles titles.

John Galbraith Horn also known as J.G. Horn or Galbraith Horn was a Scottish tennis player who competed at the Wimbledon Championships in 1881 and 1882. He won the Scottish Championships three times consecutively from 1881 to 1883. He was active from 1881 to 1892 and won 6 career singles titles.

Archibald A.Thomson was a Scottish tennis player who competed at the Wimbledon Championships 1885 and 1890. He was also known as Lobby Thompson amongst other tennis players of the time, He was a two time finalist at the Scottish Championships in 1885 and 1886. and a semi finalist at the Northern Championships in 1887. He was active from 1880 to 1894 and won 10 career singles titles.

Andrew George Ziffo also known as A.G. Ziffo, was a British tennis player who competed at the Wimbledon Championships four times between 1887 and 1890. He was a quarter finalist in men's singles in 1889, and was a finalist in the men's doubles partnering Ernest George Meers in 1888. He was active from 1885 to 1891 and won 3 career singles titles.

Charles Gladstone Robert Eames. was an English tennis player who competed at the 1888 Wimbledon Championships. He was active from 1886 to 1908 and won 8 career singles titles.

Wilfred Milne was an English tennis player. He was twice a singles quarter finalist at the Wimbledon Championships in 1884 and 1887, and twice a doubles semi-finalist in 1886 and 1891. He was active from 1881 to 1903 and won 3 career singles titles.

Edith Blake née; Edith Gurney was an English tennis player. She was a semi finalist at the 1885 Wimbledon Championships. She was active from 1884 to 1890 and won 2 career singles titles.

Thomas Spread Campion was an Irish born tennis player and physician. He was a quarter finalist at the Wimbledon Championships in the mens doubles event in 1888. He was active from 1883 to 1889 and won 6 career singles titles.

The Galashiels Open was a men's and women's grass court tennis tournament founded in 1884 early editions of the singles events were called the Galashiels Championship. It was organised by Gala Lawn Tennis Club, and played at the Mossilee Cricket Ground, Galashiels Scotland through till 1920 when it was discontinued as a stand-alone event.

Harry Stanley Scrivener born was an English tennis player and founder of the Lawn Tennis Association who later became a tennis referee. he was a two time quarter finalist in the men's singles at the Wimbledon Championships in 1888 and 1890. He was active from 1882 to 1890 and won 2 career singles titles.

Jane Meikle born was an Scottish tennis player. She was a quarter finalist at the 1885 Wimbledon Championships. She was active from 1883 to 1888 and won 7 career singles titles.

Charlotte 'Lottie' H. Paterson born also known as L.H. Paterson was an Scottish tennis player. She was a two time quarter finalist at the 1895 and 1896 Wimbledon Championships. She won the Scottish National Championships three times consecutively (1894–1896), and was a finalist at the Irish Championships in 1895. She was active from 1883 to 1908 and won 15 career singles titles.

William C Taylor (1860 – ?) was an English tennis player of the late 19th century. He was a two time semi finalist in singles at the Wimbledon Championships in 1883 and 1888. He was active from 1880 to 1908 played close to 200 matches and contested 10 career singles finals winning 3 titles.
