George Littleton Allen (1811-1882) was High Constable of Toronto from 1847 to 1852 and Governor of the Toronto Jail from 1852 to 1872.
Allen was born to a Protestant family in Sligo,Ireland,United Kingdom,and emigrated to New York at the age of 15 before moving to Toronto. He was appointed High Constable or Chief Constable of the Toronto Police Department by the city in 1847 and served in that position for five years until 1852 when he was appointed Governor of the Toronto Jail and was the first governor of the Don Jail when it opened in 1864,taking up residence in the jail's administrative wing. The Don Jail was a jail in Toronto,Ontario,Canada,located to the east of the Don River,on Gerrard Street East in the Riverdale neighbourhood. The original building was completed in 1864 and was reopened in 2013 to serve as the administrative wing of Bridgepoint Active Healthcare,a rehabilitation hospital located adjacent to the jail. Prior to its adaptive reuse as part of a healthcare facility,the building was used as a provincial jail for remanded offenders and was officially known as the Toronto Jail. The jail originally had a capacity of 184 inmates,and it was separated into an east wing for the men and a west wing for the women.

John Hutchison was a Canadian businessman,politician,and mayor of Toronto in 1857. He was born in Scotland and immigrated to Montreal in 1828. He moved to Toronto in 1847 and opened a merchant business. He was also a director on various Toronto public works projects. He was elected as an alderman to Toronto City Council in 1852,but resigned when the council refused to censure the city's mayor. He was again elected to the council in 1856 and was elected the city's mayor the following year. Hutchison's mayoralty occurred during an economic recession and his term was characterized by withdrawing funding from railway projects. The recession caused his business to become bankrupt and he did not run for a council seat upon the end of his mayoral term. Sources differ on when and where Hutchison died;one source says he died in Toronto a few years after becoming mayor,while an obituary states that he returned to Montreal when his term ended and died in Quebec in 1863.

Unwin attended the prestigious Upper Canada College,a private high school attended by many of the leading elements of Ontario's administration. After graduation,he apprenticed with John Stoughton Dennis,completing his apprenticeship in 1852. He spent the next nine years surveying Muskoka County.

Notable wildlife artist Fenwick Lansdowne stated that Pope "gave us the first comprehensive,well executed pictorial record of Canadian birds." According to Pope's biographer,Pope contributed "a great deal" to Canada's settler heritage through his paintings and journals.
