George Lewis was an American politician who served as the ninth and final mayor [2] of Roxbury,Massachusetts,from 1863 to 1867. Lewis was born in Roxbury to Eliajh Lewis [3] and Elizabeth Sumner (Doggetrt) Lewis. [4]
Lewis was first elected mayor in the election of December 8,1862. He defeated his opponent S. U. Williams by about 300 votes. [5] Pursuant to Roxbury city charter, [6] Lewis was sworn into office on the first Monday of the new year,January 5,1863. Lewis was mayor until the City of Roxbury was formerly annexed by the City of Boston on January 5,1867. [7] [ failed verification ]
