George W. Barber (a.k.a. George Barber Jr.) is an American businessman, real estate developer and philanthropist from Alabama.

Early life

Barber's father, George Warren Barber, founded Barber Dairies in the 1930s. [1] [2] It became the largest dairy company in Alabama. [2] His father promoted the use of pasteurized milk in the United States. [2]

Career

Barber was a racecar driver. [1] Later, he was a real estate developer and served as the Chairman of Barber Dairies. [1] [3] In 1998, he sold the family business to Dean Foods. [1] [4] In 2003, he established Barber Motorsports Park in Birmingham, Alabama. [1] [5]

Motorcycle collection

Barber started collecting motorcycles in the 1970s. [3] It is "the world's largest collection of motorcycles," [1] and it is in the Guinness Book of Records with more than 1,400 motorcycles covering all timelines from vintage to modern. [3] He was inducted into the Motorcycle Hall of Fame in 2014. [3]

Barber Motorsports Park is an 880 acres (360 ha) multi-purpose racing facility located in Birmingham, Alabama. It was built by George W. Barber, and includes the 230,000-square-foot (21,000 m2) Barber Vintage Motorsport Museum. It has been the site of the IndyCar Series' Grand Prix of Alabama since 2010. The Annual Barber Vintage Festival has taken place at the park each October since 2005. Barber Motorsports Park is also the home of the Porsche Track Experience.

Americade is a week-long motorcycle rally that is held during the first full week of June. The headquarters and location of many rally activities are at Fort William Henry Resort in Lake George Village, New York. The event is open to all motorcyclists and brands of motorcycles, and in the late 1990s attracted around 50,000 people annually, which grew to over 60,000 by 2007. Americade is billed by its organiser as the "World's Largest Motorcycle Touring Rally", and is distinguished from events such as Daytona Bike Week by its emphasis on motorcycle touring and by its organisation and peacefulness.

J.C. (Clarence) "Pappy" Hoel was a motorcycle racer, dealer, businessman, and founder of the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. In 1983, he received the American Motorcyclist Association's (AMA) Dud Perkins Award for outstanding contributions to motorcycling. Both J.C. "Pappy" Hoel and his wife Pearl were inducted to the Motorcycle Hall of Fame in 1998. Pappys family spans across the United States and Manitoba, Canada. Robert Hoel and sons Barry Hoel and Steven Hoel live in Winnipeg Manitoba. Pappy Hoel campground in South Dakota holds thousands of visitor's yearly for the Sturgis rally. The campground opened in 2016 on the site of a campground operating under another name.

The Alabama Academy of Honor recognizes one hundred living Alabamians for outstanding accomplishments and services to Alabama and the United States. By act of the Alabama Legislature, only one hundred living people may be members at any time. Up to ten additional members per year are elected by current members when honorees pass away, by majority vote in order of highest vote total. Any Alabama citizen or Academy member may nominate people for election. Living present and past governors of Alabama are automatically members of the Academy and do not count against the 100-person maximum. At any time, no more than twenty-five percent of the Academy's members may be politicians.
