Gerrit"Ger"Challa (born 18 December 1928) [1] is a Dutch chemist. He was professor of chemistry and polymer technology at the University of Groningen from 1965 to 1993. [2]
Challa was born in Amsterdam. [1] He studied chemistry between 1946 and 1953. He worked ten years for the Institute of Cellulose Research of the Algemene Kunstzijde Unie . [3] Challa obtained his title of doctor in maths and physics on 13 May 1959 under Jan Ketelaar at the University of Amsterdam. His thesis was titled: "Formation of polyethylene terephthalate by ester interchange : equilibria kinetics and molecular weight distribution". [1] After starting as professor at the University of Groningen he set the possibility to study polymer chemistry. Challa also developed the research department. [3]
He was elected a member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1986. [4] Since 1998 he is also an honorary member of the Royal Netherlands Chemical Society. [5]

Robert Byron Bird was an American chemical engineer and professor emeritus in the department of chemical engineering at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He was known for his research in transport phenomena of non-Newtonian fluids, including fluid dynamics of polymers, polymer kinetic theory, and rheology. He, along with Warren E. Stewart and Edwin N. Lightfoot, was an author of the classic textbook Transport Phenomena. Bird was a recipient of the National Medal of Science in 1987.

He was awarded the 2016 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, together with Sir J. Fraser Stoddart and Jean-Pierre Sauvage, "for the design and synthesis of molecular machines".

Joan Henri van der Waals was a Dutch physicist. He was professor of experimental physics at Leiden University between 1967 and 1989. He specialized in molecular physics and clathrate hydrates. One of van der Waals's most significant contributions to the study of hydrates was a series of papers between 1953 and 1958, which eventually culminated in the 1959 publication of his paper on the canonical partition function for clathrates, along with J. C. Platteeuw. To create this partition function, van der Waals made a number of simplifying assumptions, most prominently that neighboring guest gas molecules cannot interact and there is a maximum of one guest per cage.
