The Ghana DJ Awards are an annual ceremony to recognize and honor disc jockeys and other individuals who have influenced electronic dance music in Ghana. Its purpose is to foster the development of the Ghana music industry by rewarding and celebrating radio, mobile and club DJs who have excelled in their profession. The annual event highlights contributions Ghana DJs have made to the music distribution and promotion industry by playing, endorsing and publishing songs. [2] [3]

History

The awards were founded in 2011. [4] Conceived by Merqury Quaye, the first Ghana DJ Awards ceremony was held at the National Theatre on 15 February 2012. [5] Notable disc jockeys who have performed at the awards ceremony include Medikal, DJ Mic Smith, DJ Que, Kuami Eugene, KiDi, Darkovibes, Stonebwoy, DJ Vyrusky, MzVee, Kwaw Kese, DJ Kofi, DJ Black and DJ Jimmy Jatt. Awards

As of 2015, awards were presented in thirty-four categories. [7] [8]

In September 2020, the organizers introduced a new category, "Lockdown DJ of the Year", to award DJs who entertained music fans during the COVID-19 lockdown period. [9]

Categories

The top awards are presented in eight categories which include, Best DJ of the Year, Best International Non-Ghanaian DJ, Best International Ghanaian DJ, Discovery of the year, Best Event DJ of the Year, Artiste DJ of the Year, Best Mobile DJ of the Year and Best Mixtape DJ of the Year. Other categories include, DJ/Artist Collaboration of the Year, DJ's Song of The Year, Scratch DJ of The Year, Best Video Jockey of The Year, Best Club MC of The Year, Best Night Club DJ of The Year, Best Female Radio DJ of The Year, Best Male Radio DJ of The Year and Best Female DJ of The Year. During the 2018, Mark Okraku-Mantey was awarded Ghana DJ Awards Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2018 Ghana DJ Awards for his service and contribution to the DJ profession in Ghana. [11] [12]

Eligibility and entry

A jury of industry professionals is responsible for all award nominations. Once a work is nominated, an advisory board holds reviewing sessions to determine whether the work is entered in the correct category. [13]

In September 2020, Ghana DJ Awards unveiled its newly appointed 12-member board of directors. The new board announced that DJs below 18 years of age would no longer be nominated in the Overall Best DJ of the Year category. Instead, they will compete for the Young DJ of the Year award. [14] 13-year-old DJ Switch, who won Best DJ of the Year in 2019, was the first recipient of the newly created award. [15]

Changes

Venue

In October 2019, organizers of the event announced a new venue for the event. the event from the originally announced venue the National Theatre to the Accra International Conference Centre. [16]

Controversies

In February 2012, there was growing controversy about the Ghana DJ Awards, a few weeks after the event was announced. The awards festival sparked speculations of rivalry and arguments between some known DJs in Accra. [17]

In May 2012, Ghanaian DJs residing abroad have lamented about the unfairness on the part of organizers for allocating only one category for Ghanaian international DJs in the first ever honorary program for Ghanaian DJs. Organizers of the Awards later expressed their appreciation of the genuine concerns raised by the international DJs and explained that the suggestions and concerns would be reviewed and addressed accordingly in subsequent editions. [18]

In October 2019, DJ Asumadu expressed his huge disappointment at the 2019 Ghana DJ Awards, after he felt snubbed by the organizers of the awards despite playing many shows in the clubs and events. [19]

He graduated from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology with a bachelor's degree in publishing. While at KNUST, he won the Best Publishing Student award in 2005. He has made significant contributions to several pan-African websites, including Jamati.com, Orijin-ent.com, and ModernGhana.com.

Charles Nii Armah Mensah Jr., is a Ghanaian reggae-dancehall artist. He is known by his stage name Shatta Wale, formerly Bandana. His best-known singles are "Dancehall King", "My level" and "We taking over". He is also known for Already from Beyoncé's Black is King Album which featured Major Lazer. His song "Dancehall King" earned him the Artiste of the Year at the 2014 edition of the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards. Wale is also an actor who appeared in the films Never Say Never, The trial of Shatta Wale and Shattered Lives. Wale's 2004 recording "Moko Hoo" was nominated for a Ghana Music Award.

Ghana Movie Awards is an annual film award to recognise excellence in the Ghanaian film industry. The first edition was held on 25 December 2010 at the Accra International Conference Center. It’s only in 2017 that the ceremony wasn’t held due to the franchise being given to Zylofon media that year. The Award Sheme was founded by Ghanaian actor Fred Nuamah in 2009.

Erica Armah Bra-Bulu Tandoh known by the stage name DJ Switch, is a young Ghanaian female disk jockey. She is a multi talented entertainer who can also sing, rap, dance and host TV shows. She currently host Talented Kidz program on TV3. She does poetry, is an actress and delivers motivational speeches. She is the second child and the only girl among five siblings. She hails from Dadieso in the Western North Region of Ghana and attends Talented Royals International School at Weija in Accra. Her career took off when she was seven years of age. She claims she is adept at switching people's moods from sad to happy, hence the name DJ Switch.

Collins Tetteh Nartey, known professionally as DJ Aroma, is a Ghanaian disc jockey. He is the official DJ for the annual Detty Rave music festival in Ghana. He was listed among the top ten DJs in Africa in 2019. He was awarded the DJ of the Year at the 2021 3Music Awards and the Radio DJ of the Year at the 2020 RTP awards.

Zelda Nana Yaa Adepa Dedaa Manteaw known by the stage name DJ Zel, is a British-born Ghanaian disc jockey, singer and dancer. She is the youngest disc jockey to play on radio in the United Kingdom and she currently hosts the UniAfrik Show on GN Radio based in the UK.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">3Music Awards</span> Annual award event in Ghana

The 3 Music Award is Ghanaian music awards ceremony held annually since 2018 to celebrate Ghanaian music. It was established by the 3Music Network with Media General TV3 as broadcasters. The Multimedia group became the media right holder in the second and subsequent edition. In 2020, the Fan fest which was scheduled to take place at the Accra Polo Grounds was cancelled and a Virtual award ceremony was held from the Fantasy Dome, Trade Fair La. This was because of the ban on public gathering due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Mark Okraku-Mantey is a Ghanaian music producer and politician. He is currently the Deputy Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts.

Ghana Entertainment Awards USA is a Ghanaian music awards ceremony aimed at projecting the achievements of Ghanaian creatives and entertainers excelling in various crafts in and outside Ghana. The GEA exists to acknowledge the contributions of Ghanaian, African and international entertainers and artists. The Awards ceremony was founded in 2017 and usually takes place July annually.
