Gianluca Savoldi (born 20 September 1975 in Bologna, Italy), is a retired Italian footballer who played as a striker.

Career

The son of once World record transferred player Giuseppe Savoldi, the young Gianluca decided to walk in his father's footsteps. Albeit a decent striker on semi-professional level, Savoldi could not step ut to the plate when joining Ascoli in the late 1990s, but played good enough at Cosenza to be discovered by nearby Reggina, the club looking for a striker, having been relegated to Serie B and lost Massimo Marazzina.

Savoldi's first season with Reggina was the most successful of his career, the 25-year-old propelling Reggina to Serie A with 15 goals. His partnership with Davide Dionigi played its part in the success, as Reggina was among the highest-scoring teams in the league. Savoldi did only play one season in Serie A, however, with his performance at the highest level not considered as good enough by Reggina's management, prompting a sale to Serie B club Napoli, where he rejoined Dionigi. Napoli was the club that paid the World record-fee for his father, and therefore the expectations were high on Savoldi, who once again failed to deliver. Napoli was closer to relegation than promotion, and Savoldi was sold to Crotone, which was the beginning of the end of his career in the big time.

Savoldi spent the following six seasons in smaller clubs, some professional, others in a semi-professional mode. He also moved north of the border to try his wings in second division Swiss football, but his time with Chiasso was not a successful one.

S.S.C. Napoli endured a horror season in 2003–04 Serie B, relegated to Serie C by the end of the season. The target prior to the season was promotion to Serie A, and several experienced players were brought in to achieve that goal, among them Massimo Carrera, Renato Olive, Rubens Pasino and Gianluca Savoldi. Especially the signing of Savoldi was significant, since he is the son of legendary Napoli striker Giuseppe Savoldi. The club also lost its captain Roberto Stellone to Reggina.

Reggina Calcio were relegated following losing three key players in the summer of 2000. Despite goalkeeper Massimo Taibi being in full form following his Manchester United debacle, Reggina had serious goal scoring problems without departed striker Mohamed Kallon. With Davide Dionigi arriving from Sampdoria mid-season, Reggina solved that problem, and Dionigi's six goals led to a spareggio for the Serie A stay, a double-header Reggina lost. Coach Franco Colomba was not blamed for the relegation, and was given the all-clear to stay for a further season, with Reggina one of the favourites to bounce back to the top domestic division.

Reggina Calcio was re-promoted to Serie A, following a reliable performance in the 2001–02 Serie B, following its narrow relegation from the top tier. With Gianluca Savoldi and Davide Dionigi being supported by playmaker Francesco Cozza, Reggina had one of the most effective offenses in the league, and the third place was well clear of fifth-placed Napoli, the club which signed Reggina's successful coach Franco Colomba following the season's end.

Reggina Calcio just renewed its Serie A contract, thanks to a late surge in the league competition and a successful spareggio against Atalanta. Reggina drew 0-0 at home, and then turned around a deficit to win 2-1 away from home, with Francesco Cozza and Emiliano Bonazzoli being the match-winners. The player who got the most headlines during the season was Japanese playmaker Shunsuke Nakamura, who scored seven goals and created several others. He also helped Reggina to get onto the Asian market, so the signing was largely hailed as a genial manoeuvre by president Pasquale Foti.
