Giovanni Lonfernini (born 2 October 1976) was captain regent of San Marino for the semester from October 2003 to March 2004. He is of the Sammarinese Christian Democratic Party, and his co-captain-regent was Valeria Ciavatta. [1] [2]

Captains Regent are the two heads of state of the Republic of San Marino. They are elected every six months by the Grand and General Council, the country's legislative body. Normally the Regents are chosen from parties in coalition and serve a six-month term. The investiture of the Captains Regent takes place on 1 April and 1 October every year. This tradition dates back at least to 1243.

Antonello Bacciocchi was a Sammarinese politician. He was one of the captains-regent of San Marino until his term with Claudio Muccioli expired on 1 April 2006. Two referendums were held in San Marino on 2 June 2019. One was a popular initiative on amending the electoral system to require a second round to be held thirty days after a general elections between the top two parties only if neither are able to form a coalition government. The other was on a constitutional amendment proposed by the captain regent that would add sexual orientation to the list of discriminations prohibited by law. This followed a vote by the Grand and General Council on the amendment failing to meet the two-thirds quorum.
