The Giro di Padania was a multi-stage cycling race which forms part of the UCI Europe Tour. It was held at the beginning of September in Northern Italy, in the region known as the Po Valley or Padania.

The first edition, won by Ivan Basso, [1] was held from 6 September until 10 September 2011. [2] About 200 riders participated to the first Giro di Padania, with the national teams of Australia, Poland and Slovenia. This edition was heavily disrupted by activists protesting against the Lega Nord and the Berlusconi government austerity plans. [3] [4] Activists also claimed that the race was intended as political Propaganda for the Lega Nord political party. [5] [6] In the 2011 edition the leader's jersey was green (which is also the colour of Lega Nord), but the colour was changed to blue in 2012.

The race was cancelled in 2013 and has not been held since. [7]

Lega Nord Toscana

Lega Nord Toscana is a regionalist political party in Tuscany, Italy. Founded in 1987, it has functioned as the "national" section of Lega Nord in the region since 1991.

The 1952 Giro d'Italia was the 35th edition of the Giro d'Italia, one of cycling's Grand Tours. The Giro started off in Milan on 17 May with a 217 km (134.8 mi) flat stage and concluded back in Milan with a 147 km (91.3 mi) relatively flat mass-start stage on 8 June. Sixteen teams entered the race, which was won by Italian Fausto Coppi of the Bianchi team. Second and third respectively were Italian Fiorenzo Magni and Swiss rider Ferdinand Kübler.

The 1974 Giro d'Italia was the 57th running of the Giro d'Italia, one of cycling's Grand Tours races. The Giro started in Vatican City, on 16 May, with a 164 km (102 mi) stage and concluded in Milan, on 8 June, with 257 km (160 mi) leg. A total of 140 riders from fourteen teams entered the 22-stage race, that was won by Belgian Eddy Merckx of the Molteni team. The second and third places were taken by Italians Gianbattista Baronchelli and Felice Gimondi, respectively. Merckx's victory in the 1974 Giro was his first step in completing the Triple Crown of Cycling – winning the Giro d'Italia, the Tour de France, and the World Championship road race in one calendar year – becoming the first rider ever to do so.

The 1947 Giro d'Italia was the 30th edition of the Giro d'Italia, a cycling race organized and sponsored by the newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport. The race began on 24 May in Milan with a stage that stretched 190 km (118 mi) to Turin, finishing back in Milan on 15 June after a 278 km (173 mi) stage and a total distance covered of 3,843 km (2,388 mi). The race was won by the Italian rider Fausto Coppi of the Bianchi team, with fellow Italians Gino Bartali and Giulio Bresci coming in second and third respectively.

2009 Giro dItalia cycling race

The 2009 Giro d'Italia was the 92nd running of the Giro d'Italia, one of cycling's Grand Tours. It was held from 9 to 31 May 2009, and marked the 100th year since the first edition of the race. Starting in Venice and finishing in Rome, 22 teams competed over 21 stages.

The 1946 Giro d'Italia was the 29th edition of the Giro d'Italia, a cycling race organized and sponsored by the newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport. The race began on 15 June in Milan with a stage that stretched 185 km (115 mi) to Turin, finishing back in Milan on 7 July after a 176 km (109 mi) stage and a total distance covered of 3,039.5 km (1,889 mi). The race was won by the Italian rider Gino Bartali of the Legnano team, with fellow Italians Fausto Coppi and Vito Ortelli coming in second and third respectively.

The 2011 Giro di Padania was the first edition of the Giro di Padania cycling stage race. It started on 6 September in Paesana and ended on the 10th in Montecchio Maggiore.

The 2012 Monviso-Venezia — Il Padania was the second edition of the race, held in 2011 as Giro di Padania. The race started on 3 September in Sant'Agostino and ended on 7 September in Frabosa Soprana, passing through the area struck by an earthquake in May 2012.
