Glendale, Colorado Territory is a former settlement that was established in the 1860s as a stagecoach stop and then a farming community and school in the Beaver Creek area of Penrose, Colorado.^[1]^[2] First known as the settlement of Beaver Creek, it became Glendale, and finally Penrose.^[3]

Settlement

Settlers followed the Pike's Peak gold rush (July 1858 and lasted until the creation of the Territory of Colorado on February 28, 1861). Farmers were incentivized by the Homestead Act to come to the area.^[2] It was known as the Beaver Creek settlement initially,^[2]^[3] with a post office there by 1868.^[4] Then, the settlement became known as Glendale.^[2]^[3] In 1870, 22 families lived in the community, and more in 1880.^[5]

Stage coach station and hotel

A stage coach stop was established along Beaver Creek, on a stage road from Old Colorado City.^[5] A two-story stone building with eleven bedrooms was constructed in 1868 by John McClure. It became known as McClure House and the Glendale Stage Stop.^[2] It is also known as the Glendale Inn Stage Coach Stop^[1] and Glendale House and Stagecoach Inn.^[5] It had a restaurant, orchards, and a garden.^[5] Corrals held 1,000 horses and mules for the stage line.^[6] The stage coach road was built by William McClelland and Bob Spotswood.^[2] The stage delivered up to 100 people per day, food, supplies, and the mail.^[6]^[7] Trappers and scouts stopped by. Cowboys and Native Americans on cattle drives from Texas camped nearby.^[6]

In 1869, the business was renamed Glendale House and, operated by its new owner Rev. John Jeffries, and by 1874, it took in boarders.^[2] Church gatherings, parties, and weddings were held there.^[5]

Glendale school

The Glendale School was established, the first in the Penrose area, in a log cabin in 1868.^[2]^[3] It was rebuilt in stone in 1873 after a fire. The schoolhouse was used for community functions, like pot luck dinners. It was used as a school until 1912, when a school was built in Penrose. Only the stone foundation remains.^[2]

Early 20th century

Spencer Penrose began buying up water rights by 1909. The settlement was abandoned after the flood of Red Creek and Beaver Creek on July 3, 1921.^[5]^[6] Most of the stone walls of the hotel and stage coach stop remain, but the roof and porches were burned in a fire.^[2]

Legend

A woman and a man, Kathleen Cooper and Julian LaSalle, a miner from Leadville were to be married at the Glendale State Stop. LaSalle was just a few miles from Glendale when he was robbed and killed for his gold. Cooper, daughter of a rancher, waited in a bridal dress and veil. Wedding attendees also awaited LaSalle at the stop. Cooper died about one year later of influenza. The site of their planned wedding is reported to be haunted since then.^[2]

The Overland Trail was a stagecoach and wagon trail in the American West during the 19th century. While portions of the route had been used by explorers and trappers since the 1820s, the Overland Trail was most heavily used in the 1860s as a route alternative to the Oregon, California, and Mormon trails through central Wyoming. The Overland Trail was famously used by the Overland Stage Company owned by Ben Holladay to run mail and passengers to Salt Lake City, Utah, via stagecoaches in the early 1860s. Starting from Atchison, Kansas, the trail descended into Colorado before looping back up to southern Wyoming and rejoining the Oregon Trail at Fort Bridger. The Galena–Chicago trail was a stagecoach route located in northern Illinois that ran from the mid-to-late 1830s until 1854. As indicated by its name, the route linked Chicago, located in the northeast of the state, with Galena which was located in the lead mining district of the northwest. The Chicago-Galena trail includes the "Stagecoach Trail" that runs between Galena and Lena, Illinois. East of Lena the stage route follows U.S. Route 20 and Business U.S. Route 20 through Eleroy, Freeport and Rockford to Belvidere. Miller was called the "Mother of Lafayette. She was the first woman bank president in the United States, a philanthropist and an astute businesswoman.

San Juan City was designated the county seat of Hinsdale County, Colorado when the county was established on February 10, 1874. On February 23, 1875, voters decided to move the county seat to Lake City. The town began as a mining camp, with the goal to become a hub for transportation of supplies to area mines. After a year as the county seat, it became a stage stop, offering food and lodging. It operated as a stage stop, post office, and roadhouse into the 1880s. In 1893, San Juan City became part of Mineral County, Colorado. A post office operated out of San Juan City, off and on, until 1923. The town's site, located along Clear Creek, is now Freemon's Guest Ranch. San Juan Ranch is also said to be the former site of San Juan City, but the former Galloway's transportion hub that became San Juan Ranch was located a few miles away from the town.
