Glenn Naylor (born 11 August 1972) is an English former footballer who made more than 300 appearances in the Football League playing for York City and Darlington. He was forced to retire in 2003 due to injury.

Career

Naylor played as a left back at school, but became a prolific striker in junior football and progressed under York City's Youth Training Scheme. [3]

York City Football Club is a professional association football club based in York, North Yorkshire, England. Founded in 1922, the club was elected to play in the Midland League, and competed in this league for seven seasons before being elected to the Football League as members of the Third Division North in 1929. York reached the second tier of English football with promotion to the Second Division in 1974, but were relegated two years later. York became the first team to reach 100 points in a Football League season after winning the 1983–84 Fourth Division championship with 101 points, which remains to be the club's only league title. The club was relegated to the Football Conference following the 2003–04 season, but returned to the Football League with victory in the 2012 Conference Premier play-off Final.

The 1993 Football League Third Division play-off Final was an association football match which was played on 29 May 1993 at Wembley Stadium, London, between York City and Crewe Alexandra. It was to determine the fourth and final team to gain promotion from the Football League Third Division to the Second Division. The top three teams of the 1992–93 Football League Third Division, Cardiff City, Wrexham and Barnet, gained automatic promotion to the Second Division, while those placed from fourth to seventh place in the table took part in play-offs. The winners of the play-off semi-finals competed for the final place for the 1993–94 season in the Second Division. The losing semi-finalists were Walsall and Bury who had been defeated by Crewe Alexandra and York City respectively.

The 1996–97 season was Port Vale's 85th season of football in the English Football League, and third successive season in the First Division. John Rudge led the club to its joint-second highest ever league finish, as Vale finished in eighth spot, four points from the play-offs. Vale exited both the FA Cup and the League Cup at the Third Round.

During the 1996–97 English football season, Gillingham F.C. competed in the Football League Second Division, the third tier of the English football league system. It was the 65th season in which Gillingham competed in the Football League, and the 47th since the club was voted back into the league in 1950. In the previous season, the team had gained promotion from the Third Division. Prior to the new season, Gillingham signed seven new players, paying a new club record transfer fee for Watford's Andy Hessenthaler. The team's form was poor in the first half of the season and at the end of 1996, Gillingham were in 21st position in the 24-team league table, putting them in danger of relegation back to the fourth tier. The club signed Ade Akinbiyi from Norwich City for another record fee in early January. In the second half of the season the team's performances improved and they finished the season in 11th position in the table.
