Glenn Thomas Walksler (born 1963) is an American contemporary artist based in Chicago. He is known primarily for works involving silkscreen printing and photographic site-specific installations. His Far East travels and interest in the urban environment have influenced his subject matter and themes. [1]
Glenn Wexler was born in Chicago and grew up in the west side Austin neighborhood and Oak Park, Illinois. In the late 1980s he began pursuing a career in graphic and visual arts. His first studio was a live/work space in the Wicker Park, Chicago neighborhood on the near northwest side. In what was then mainly an artist community, he became very active producing screen-printed works and exhibiting frequently. By the early 1990s he became part of a group of artists associated with events and venues in and around the areas Flat Iron and Tower Building.
It was during that time, Wexler met renowned artist Ed Paschke, of the Chicago Imagists, and they soon became friends. Conversing and working with Paschke in his far north side studio, Wexler learned much about the art world and was profoundly influenced to continue developing as an artist. [2]
Inspired by the likes of Robert Rauschenberg and Andy Warhol, Wexler’s early work involved screen-printing, painting and image appropriation. He drew source material from magazines, catalogs and newspapers mainly published in Japan and Hong Kong. The images were made into silk screens, and then printed onto paper, canvas, steel, glass, as well as found objects and other unconventional surfaces. The results were often brightly colored, graphics-inspired works reminiscent of 1960s-era Pop Art.
By the mid-to late 1990s, after exhibiting in and visiting several cities throughout Europe and Asia, Wexler’s work changed. He developed an interest in the urban setting, specifically, the relationship between architectural design and nature. He largely abandoned painting, focusing more on photography, printmaking, fabrication, and installation. [2]
A pivotal work was Haven (2001–02) a multi-space installation project in which Wexler affixed cut vinyl images of a shell—a haven within nature—to discreet locations inside of 25 Chicago area galleries and art centers. (A few remain.) Seeking a dialogue with each site, Haven was Wexler’s first foray into environmental art. [3]
Transit a series of site-specific installations, uses lighting and backlit photographs—shot in and around the transit systems of Tokyo, Osaka and Bangkok—to create a continuous though disjunctive cinematic narrative. These installations take a different shape and length at each location, engaging the space of the interior architecture. [4] Imagery includes signage, lighting, shrines, people, and plant life, some blurred—shot while in motion, and others while stationary, as if momentarily arrested. [5] [6]
According to the artist, "I have mainly been interested in the existence or placement of nature within the proximity of architecture and the co-existence of the traditional and the contemporary. By connecting several photographs together I’m attempting to recreate personal journeys and passing moments in a city." [7]

Visual arts of Chicago refers to paintings, prints, illustrations, textile art, sculpture, ceramics and other visual artworks produced in Chicago or by people with a connection to Chicago. Since World War II, Chicago visual art has had a strong individualistic streak, little influenced by outside fashions. "One of the unique characteristics of Chicago," said Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts curator Bob Cozzolino, "is there's always been a very pronounced effort to not be derivative, to not follow the status quo." The Chicago art world has been described as having "a stubborn sense ... of tolerant pluralism." However, Chicago's art scene is "critically neglected." Critic Andrew Patner has said, "Chicago's commitment to figurative painting, dating back to the post-War period, has often put it at odds with New York critics and dealers." It is argued that Chicago art is rarely found in Chicago museums; some of the most remarkable Chicago artworks are found in other cities.
Anne Wilson is a Chicago-based visual artist. Wilson creates sculpture, drawings, Internet projects, photography, performance, and DVD stop motion animations employing table linens, bed sheets, human hair, lace, thread and wire. Her work extends the traditional processes of fiber art to other media. Wilson is a professor in the Department of Fiber and Material Studies at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
Michael Nakoneczny is an American artist. He lived in Chicago for over twenty years. He is currently teaching painting at the University of Alaska in Fairbanks, Alaska. Michael has received numerous awards including a Rasmuson Foundation Grant, Illinois Art Council Fellowship and an Arts Midwest/NEA Regional Fellowship. He received a BFA from Cleveland State University and an MFA from the University of Cincinnati. René Romero Schuler is an American painter and sculptor who constructs her paintings with trowels and palette knives. Schuler is inspired by the Bay Area Figurative Movement of the 1950s and '60s. She has taught painting at the Illinois Institute of Art and Chicago City Colleges, lectured at Northwestern University, and was board member of the Loyola University Museum of Art (LUMA) in Chicago.
Richard Wetzel is an American artist. He is best known for his oil paintings but also has exhibited collages and sculpture. In 1969 and 1970, Wetzel exhibited with the Chicago Imagists, a grouping of Chicago artists who were ascendant in the late 1960s and early 1970s.

Don Baum was an American curator, artist and educator, most known as a key impresario and promoter of the Chicago Imagists, a group of artists that had an enduring impact on American art in the later twentieth century. Described by the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago (MCA) as "an indispensable curator of the Chicago school," Baum was known for lively and irreverent exhibitions that offered fresh perspectives combining elements of Surrealism and Pop and that broke down barriers between schooled and untrained, or so-called outsider artists. From 1956 to 1972, Baum was exhibitions director at Chicago's Hyde Park Art Center. It was there, in the 1960s, that he became involved with a group of young artists he exhibited as "Hairy Who" that later expanded to become the Chicago Imagists. That group included Ed Paschke, Jim Nutt, Roger Brown, Gladys Nilsson, and Karl Wirsum. Baum mounted two major shows at the MCA that featured the emerging artists in their first museum exhibitions: "Don Baum Sez: 'Chicago Needs Famous Artists'" (1969) and "Made in Chicago" (1973), which shaped a vision of Chicago's art world as a place of meticulous craftsmanship and vernacular inspiration.
William Conger is a Chicago-based, American painter and educator, known for a dynamic, subjective style of abstraction descended from Kandinsky, which consciously employs illogical, illusionistic space and light and ambiguous forms that evoke metaphorical associations. He is a member of the "Allusive Abstractionists," an informal group of Chicago painters self-named in 1981, whose paradoxical styles countered the reductive minimalism that dominated post-1960s art. In 1982, critic Mary Mathews Gedo hailed them as "prescient prophets of the new style of abstraction" that flowered in the 1980s. In his essay for Conger's fifty-year career retrospective, Donald Kuspit called Conger art-historically daring for forging a path of subjective abstraction after minimalism had allegedly purged painting of an inner life. Despite being abstract, his work has a strong connection to Chicago's urban, lakeside geography and displays idiosyncratic variations of tendencies identified with Chicago Imagist art. A hallmark of Conger's career has been his enduring capacity for improvisation and discovery within self-prescribed stylistic limits.
Jim Isermann is an American artist. He is based in Palm Springs and Guerneville, California. In 1977 he graduated from University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and then received an MFA from CalArts in 1980. His artwork has focused on post-war industrial design and architecture. He has participated in numerous exhibitions in art galleries and museum, and has also created large scale commissioned projects utilizing industrial manufacturing processes. His work has been presented in solo exhibitions at Richard Telles, Los Angeles, Praz-Delavallade, Paris (2010), Corvi-Mora, London (2011), Mary Boone Gallery, New York and others. Recent commissioned projects include works for the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles, CA, Yale University Art Museum in New Haven, CT, University of California, Riverside, Los Angeles Metro, and an installation for the Cowboys Stadium in Dallas, TX.

Buzz Spector is an American artist and critic. Born in Chicago in 1948, he received his Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale in 1972. He received his Master of Fine Arts (MFA) from the University of Chicago in 1978. Spector taught at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Cornell University, and Washington University in St. Louis's Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts, where he is Emeritus Professor.
