GoAntiques is an online retail and auction market place for antiques and collectibles. The company was founded as an Antique Networking in 1994 and is currently based in the Portland, Oregon area. [1]

Business profile

GoAntiques inventory consists of antique, collectible, art, and other merchandise for sale by member dealers. Along with TIAS.com, and Ruby Lane it was long ago considered one of the 3 major online antique malls. [2] As of July 2014, the site lists more than 400,000 items from 1,800 dealers in 29 countries.

History

Antique Networking, Inc. was founded in Ohio in 1994 by Kathy Kamnikar, [3] and began operating online by June 1995. [4] It began operating under the domain antiqnet.com in 1996 and in that year was listed by the Chicago Tribune as one of 8 dominant online services (alongside historical auction houses Sotheby's and Christie's). [5] Antique Networking merged with Baton Rouge, Louisiana-based GoAntiques in 2001 and began operating under the goantiques.com domain. [6]

In 2003 the company moved headquarters from Baton Rouge to Columbus, Ohio under Chapter 11 Reorganization. [7] [8]

In October 2008, antiques and collectibles research company WorthPoint acquired GoAntiques. [9]

In May 2015, online social marketplace Gemr acquired GoAntiques. [10] Gemr later divested itself of the GoAntiques site. [11]

Bidtopia was an e-commerce site originally launched in 2007 as a private auction site for Warehouse86 Ventures, LLC. Paul St. James, an owner of Bargainland, which had been the largest PowerSeller on eBay that same year, started the new enterprise in response to changes in eBay policies regarding high volume sales of brand name merchandise and restrictions on sellers with poor customer feedback. Bidtopia suffered the loss of one of its three distribution centers in 2008, and went offline and possibly out of business in early 2010.

iOffer was a San Francisco-based online trading community that was launched on May 1, 2002 by Steven Nerayoff. As of February 2008, it claimed to have nearly one million total users, including approximately 75,000 sellers, although this information cannot be independently verified, nor is it known how many of these users are active.

Auctionata was an online auction house and eCommerce company specializing in luxury goods, art, antiques and collectibles based in Berlin with offices in New York. Auctionata had a team of 250 art experts who worked on commission and were not directly employed by Auctionata. These experts were paid by the minute via PayPal for valuing, authenticating, and curating objects including art, cars, watches, antiques. Since opening in February 2012, Auctionata had evaluated and verified over 21,000 pieces of art. Notably, Auctionata's experts discovered a watercolor by Egon Schiele, which was valued at a starting price of $1.3 million. Auctionata was declared insolvent on February 29, 2017 by announcing it had ceased operations.
