Golam Rabbani Helal was a Bangladesh national footballer and organizer.

Career

From 1979 to 1985, Helal played for the Bangladesh national football team. [1] He also played for Abahani from 1975 to 1988. He briefly played for the Bangladesh Jute Mills Corporation football team, Team BJMC. [2] After retiring from playing he became a director of Abahani. [2] In April 2008, his candidacy for the Bangladesh Football Federation was challenged in court by Shamsul Haque Chowdhury. The court dismissed the charges and cleared the way for him to contest the election. [3] On 10 July 2008, he was made a member of Dhaka Metropolis League Committee. [4] From 2008 to 2012, he was an executive member of Bangladesh Football Federation. [5] On 11 December 2011, he resigned from the National Team Management Committee of the Bangladesh Football Federation after describing them as inefficient and ineffective. [6]

Helal was to contest the Bangladesh Football Federation for the post of President in 2012. He withdrew his candidacy and threw his support behind the incumbent, Kazi Salahuddin. [7]

Helal was arrested in 1982 after getting into a brawl with players of Mohammedan Sporting Club, arch rivals of Abahani, during a match. The rivalry between Abahani and Mohammedan Sporting Club is called the Dhaka Derby. [2] Ashraf Uddin Ahmed Chunnu, Kazi Anwar, and Kazi Salahuddin were also arrested along with Helal. [8]

Death

Helal died on 30 May 2020 at Square Hospital, Dhaka, Bangladesh. [2] He was being treated for brain haemorrhage. [9] He was buried in Azimpur Graveyard. [10]

He played for and captained the Bangladesh national team, retiring in 1983. Salahuddin is the first football player from the country to play abroad in the professional league in Hong Kong and is considered to be Bangladsh's first professional sports athlete.

Ahmed is the vice president of the Bangladesh Football Federation and the chairman of National Team's Committee as of December 2020. He is a director of Gemcon Group.

Shamsul Haque Chowdhury is a Bangladesh Awami League politician and a present Member of Parliament from Chittagong-12. He is also the general secretary of Chittagong based football club Chittagong Abahani.

Monwar Hossain Nannu was a Bangladeshi football player during the 1970s and early 1980s. Initially, He played as an attacking midfielder for Abahani Krira Chakra in Dhaka League. Following an injury in the mid-1970s, he moved to the central defender position and excelled in that position as well. He was a member of Bangladesh's first national football team.

Samrat Hossain Emily was a Bangladeshi footballer of the 1980s. After starting his career as a striker, he moved to the role of an attacking midfielder in the 2nd half of the decade. He is among the few footballers who played with equal success for both the giants Mohammedan SC and Abahani Limited Dhaka. Between 1983 and 1988-89 he won a record 6 successive league titles. He also represented the Bangladesh national team between 1982 and 1988.

Kazi Nazrul Islam is a retired Bangladeshi professional footballer who played as a defender. He played for the Bangladesh national team from 1999 to 2008 and captained the team on multiple occasions. Nazrul currently works as a fitness trainer for his former club Abahani Limited Dhaka.
