Good Things Foundation is a registered charity based in the UK, the objective of which is to make the benefits of digital technology more accessible. It manages the Online Centres Network, the Learn My Way learning platform, [1] and the National Databank. [2]

The charity was originally known as Online Centres Foundation before rebranding as Tinder Foundation in 2013. A further rebrand, to Good Things Foundation, took place in November 2016. [3] Good Things Foundation's chief executive is Helen Milner OBE.

History

Originally known as Online Centres Foundation, the charity was established in December 2011 to manage the UK online centres contract, taking on the network on from learndirect (then Ufi Ltd). [4]

In July 2013, the company rebranded as Tinder Foundation. In November 2016, they rebranded once more as Good Things Foundation, partially to avoid confusion with dating application Tinder. [5] [6] [7]

Operations

Since founding, Good Things Foundation has managed the Online Centres Network – providing support to community organisations teaching digital skills through a learning platform, called Learn My Way. The charity adopted a new strategy in 2022, [8] establishing a 'National Databank' which provides free access to mobile connectivity data for people on low incomes. [9]

Funding

Good Things Foundation receives funding from a mixture of public, private and third sectors, including Virgin Media O2, [10] Vodafone, [11] and Nominet UK. [12] The charity has worked closely with government departments, [13] [14] [15] and currently works with regional authorities including the Greater London Authority [16] and the Greater Manchester Combined Authority. [17]

The Online Centres Network is a UK-based network which helps communities tackle social and digital exclusion.

Voice short codes enable UK mobile phone users to dial a 5-digit short code as an alternative to a standard geographic or non-geographic long number. The consumer pays anything between 0p and £2/min. The short code is usually forwarded to a standard geographic number - typically an existing call centre or interactive voice response (IVR) system.

Tinder is an online dating and geosocial networking application launched in 2012. On Tinder, users "swipe right" to like or "swipe left" to dislike other users' profiles, which include their photos, a short bio, and some of their interests. Tinder uses a "double opt-in" system, also called "matching", where two users must like each other before they can exchange messages.

Helen Louise Milner OBE is the Chief Executive of the Good Things Foundation, a digital inclusion and social inclusion charity based in the UK. Following a 30-year career working on the internet and with communities, in 2012 Milner was inducted into the British Interactive Media Association's Digital Hall of Fame, and in 2013 became a member of The House of Commons Speaker's Commission for Digital Democracy. In June 2015 Milner was appointed an OBE for services to digital inclusion in the Queen's Birthday Honours List.

Samaritans Radar was a Twitter-based service created by the digital advertising agency Jam for the British emotional support charity Samaritans. It was intended as a way to inform users when their Twitter contacts were potentially in need of emotional support. The app scanned Twitter for key phrases such as "help me", "hate myself", mentions of being depressed or needing someone to talk to and then sent an email to that user's friends. Samaritans suspended the Radar service following widespread criticism and a petition asking the charity to discontinue the service.

Feeld is a location-based online dating application for iOS and Android that facilitates communication between people interested in ethical non-monogamy, polyamory, casual sex, kink, swinging, and other alternative relationship models and sexual preferences. According to a review from The New York Times, over a third of users are on the app with a partner, and 45 percent identify as something other than heterosexual.

GOV.UK Verify was an identity assurance system developed by the British Government Digital Service (GDS) which was in operation between May 2016 and April 2023. The system was intended to provide a single trusted login across all British government digital services, verifying the user's identity in 15 minutes. It allowed users to choose one of several companies to verify their identity to a standard level of assurance before accessing 22 central government online services.
