Gordon Laing (born 1964) is a British classical bassoonist, contrabassoonist, and pedagogue. [1] He studied bassoon at the Redbridge Music School. He later studied at the Royal College of Music with Geoffrey Gambold (bassoon) and John Burness (contra-bassoon), who were principals with the BBC Symphony Orchestra at the time. He was a member of the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden in 1995, and became Principal Contra-Bassoon with the Philharmonia Orchestra in 1997.

He is Professor of Basson at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama.

Per Hannevold, born 1953, is a member of the Bergen Woodwind Quintet and has been principal bassoon of the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra since 1979. He was a member of the Norwegian Radio Orchestra (Kork) from 1974 till 1979. He is a professor at the Grieg Academy, University of Bergen. His repertoire includes all of the standard bassoon concerto and chamber music works, and Ruth Bakke’s Illuminations, John Williams’s The Five Sacred Trees, and Jean Françaix’s Concerto. Worldwide appearances include performances in Taiwan, Lithuania, and the Lincoln Center concert honoring the 50th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Mr. Hannevold has presented master classes internationally and has served as a juror at bassoon competitions in Finland, France, Lithuania, Latvia, and the U.S. He has been a faculty member of the Aspen Music Festival and School since 1993. The spring of 2016 he celebrated 25 years of the Nordic Bassoon Symposium in Bergen, Norway. He studied with Arnulf Brachel in Oslo, Knut Sønstevold in Stockholm, and in the United States with Harold Goltzer and Louis Skinner. Mr. Hannevold’s latest CD, the highly acclaimed Music for Per includes Lassen’s Strange Interlude No. 3 in which he imitates rock-guitar riffs, as well as works by David Maslanka and Oivind Westby. John Orford is a British classical bassoonist. He studied under Charles Cracknell and William Waterhouse at the Royal Manchester College of Music. After graduation, he became a member of the Bournemouth Sinfonietta, and later the BBC Symphony Orchestra. In 1982, he was appointed Principal Bassoon of the London Sinfonietta. In 1984, he joined the faculty at the Royal Academy of Music and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama as professor of bassoon. In 1999, he commissioned Geoffrey Grey to write the piece Preamble and 5 Variations for bassoon and piano. He has appeared with all the major British orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra, London Philharmonic, Royal Philharmonic, and the Philharmonia.

Michael Chapman was a British classical bassoonist and reed-maker.

Martin Gatt is a British classical bassoonist. He studied under Archie Camden at the Royal College of Music in London. He served as principal bassoonist of the London Philharmonic Orchestra from 1958 to 1966, after which he was appointed principal bassoonist of the English Chamber Orchestra from 1966 to 1976. He also held the post of principal bassoon of the London Symphony Orchestra from 1977 to 1998, and was the bassoonist in the Barry Tuckwell Wind Quintet from 1967 to 1991. He is also active in music education. At the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts he founded the Department of Wind, Brass and Percussion. He taught at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama from 1967 to 1984, and is currently a professor of Bassoon at the Royal College of Music.

Roger Birnstingl is a British classical bassoonist. He started playing the bassoon at age 14, Educated at Bedales School and later studied with Archie Camden at the Royal College of Music in London. He has served as principal bassoonist of the London Philharmonic (1956–1958), the Royal Philharmonic (1961–1964) and the London Symphony Orchestra (1964–1977). He later served as principal bassoonist with the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande until his retirement in 1997. He is currently professor of bassoon at the Geneva Conservatoire, where his students have included Carlo Colombo, principal bassoonist of the Lyon Opera Orchestra; and Kim Walker. He is also a joint president of the British Double Reed Society.
