Gorniy Gigant District (or Gorny Gigant) is a district located in Almaty, Kazakhstan. [1] [2] One of the most notable aspects of the Gorniy Gigant District is the Sunkar International Ski Jumping Complex. The ski resort was built in 2010 and is located 900 meters above sea level. [3] [4] [5] The area is also a tourist destination on account of its natural scenery, architecture, walking routes, and cafes (uzbechkas). [6] [7] Gorniy Gigant District also includes rural dachas, summer homes, and residential apartments. The area is fenced, and comprises 14 hectares. [8] [9] [10]

Almaty bid for the 2022 Winter Olympics

Almaty 2022 was an unsuccessful bid for the 2022 Winter Olympics by the city of Almaty and the National Olympic Committee of the Republic of Kazakhstan. The IOC selected the host city for the 2022 Winter Olympics at the 128th IOC Session in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on July 31, 2015, in which Beijing won. Under the slogan “Keeping it Real,” Almaty had emphasized their traditional winter setting with tall mountains and plenty of natural snow coverage as well as compactness — most venues are within half an hour’s travel through Alpine scenery. Almaty was the only contender to have never hosted the Olympics before. Almaty previously hosted the 2017 Winter Universiade.

The COVID-19 pandemic in Kazakhstan is part of the worldwide pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019 caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2. The virus was confirmed to have reached Kazakhstan on 13 March 2020. It involved two Kazakh citizens in Almaty who were recently returned from Germany. That same day, two more cases were confirmed with one female arriving from Italy in Nur-Sultan and the other from Germany in Almaty as well.
