Christian hip hop is a cross-genre of contemporary Christian music and hip hop music. It emerged from urban contemporary music and Christian media in the United States during the 1980s.
Andraé Edward Crouch was an American gospel singer, songwriter, arranger, record producer and pastor. Referred to as "the father of modern gospel music" by contemporary Christian and gospel music professionals, Crouch was known for his compositions "The Blood Will Never Lose Its Power", "My Tribute " and "Soon and Very Soon". He collaborated on some of his recordings with famous and popular artists such as Stevie Wonder, El DeBarge, Philip Bailey, Chaka Khan, and Sheila E., as well as the vocal group Take 6, and many popular artists covered his material, including Bob Dylan, Barbara Mandrell, Paul Simon, Elvis Presley and Little Richard. In the 1980s and 1990s, he was known as the "go-to" producer for superstars who sought a gospel choir sound in their recordings; he appeared on a number of recordings, including Michael Jackson's "Man In the Mirror", Madonna's "Like a Prayer", and "The Power", a duet between Elton John and Little Richard. Crouch was noted for his talent of incorporating contemporary secular music styles into the gospel music he grew up with. His efforts in this area helped pave the way for early American contemporary Christian music during the 1960s and 1970s.
Tical is the debut studio album by American rapper and Wu-Tang Clan member Method Man. It was released November 15, 1994, by Def Jam Recordings. It was the first Wu-Tang solo album released after the group's debut, Enter the Wu-Tang . Similar to all first generation solo Wu-Tang projects, Tical was mainly produced by group member RZA, who provided a dark, murky and rugged sound. The album features guest appearances from RZA, Raekwon, Inspectah Deck, as well as several affiliates, who would later appear on future group projects. On October 5, 2017, Method Man revealed on the Viceland talk show Desus & Mero that the album's title is an acronym for "taking into consideration all lives."
Jonah Kirsten Sorrentino, better known by his stage name KJ-52, is a Christian rapper from Tampa, Florida. The "KJ" part of his name refers to his old rap alias, "King J. Mac," a name which he later described in one of his podcasts as "horribly cheesy." "52", which is pronounced "five two", not "fifty-two", is a reference to the Biblical story of Jesus feeding the multitude with five loaves and two fish, which is also sung about in his song "Push Up" from The Yearbook and in the "KJ Five Two" on It's Pronounced Five Two. He was awarded the Rap/Hip Hop Recorded Song of the Year for "Never Look Away" and Rap/Hip Hop Album of the Year at the GMA Dove Awards of 2007. On July 28, 2009, KJ-52 released "End of My Rope", which is the first single for his album Five-Two Television.
Lecrae Devaughn Moore, known professionally as Lecrae, is an American Christian rapper, singer, songwriter, record producer, record executive, and actor. To date, he has released ten studio albums and three mixtapes as a solo artist, and has released three studio albums, a remix album, one EP, and numerous singles as the leader of the hip hop group 116 Clique.
Marcus Tyrone Gray, known as Flame, is an American Lutheran Christian hip hop rapper with Clear Sight Music. He has released nine albums. Flame has been nominated for several Dove and Stellar Awards. The Our World: Redeemed album was nominated for a Grammy Award.
Gang Affiliated is the debut album released by Gospel Gangstaz. It was released on October 28, 1994 for MYX Records and featured production from DJ Dove and Mr. Solo. The album is widely considered as the first harder-edged Christian hip hop album as the sound and lyrics had a gritty element to them that was virtually unseen in the genre at the time as this album sounded much like the popular West Coast Gangsta G-funk music of the mid-1990s. Gang Affiliated managed to make it to No. 19 on the Top Christian Albums Billboard chart. However, the three singles: "Mobbin' ", "Testimony" and "Y Cain't da Homiez Hear Me?" did not make it to any Billboard charts.
Do or Die is the second album released by Gospel Gangstaz, issued in November 1995 on Holy Terra Records. The album peaked at No. 24 on the Billboard Top Christian Albums chart.
I Can See Clearly Now is the Grammy-nominated third album released by Gospel Gangstaz. It was released on May 18, 1999 for B-Rite Records and featured production by Mr. Solo, Tik Tokk, Chillie' Baby, DeMarie "Meech" Sheki, Twenty20 and Trackmasters. I Can See Clearly made it on three Billboard charts, 25 on the Top Heatseekers, 11 on the Top Christian Albums and 3 on the Top Gospel Albums. I Can See Clearly Now was a critical success and remains the group's most successful album. At the 42nd Annual Grammy Awards, the album was nominated for the Best Rock Gospel Album, however it lost to Rebecca St. James' Pray.
The Exodus is the fourth album released by Gospel Gangstaz. It was released on October 15, 2002, for Native Record and featured production from Mr. Solo, Tik Tokk, Chillie' Baby, Prodeje, Bootsy Collins and Bobby Ross Avila. The Exodus found some success, making it to 17 on the Top Gospel Albums and 85 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums Billboard charts. The Exodus was the first album by the Gospel Gangstaz to not make it to the Top Christian Albums and the first to make it on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop album chart.
The Flood is the sixth album released by Gospel Gangstaz. It was released on August 8, 2006, for Alliant Records and featured production Marvin "Twenty/20 Davis", Mr. Solo, Tik Tokk, Chillie' Baby and Jeffrey Baggett. The Flood was the first studio album by the group to not make it on any Billboard charts.
William Lee Barefield III, better known by his stage name Trip Lee, is an American Christian rapper and singer. Signed to Reach Records, he has recorded both as a solo artist and as a founding member of the 116 Clique. Originally from Dallas, Texas, he serves as a young adult pastor at Concord Church. His third album, Between Two Worlds (2010), was nominated for two Dove Awards and won the Stellar Award for Best Hip Hop Album in 2011.

Andrew Aaron Mineo, is an American Christian hip hop artist, producer, music executive, and video director based in New York City. He is signed to Reach Records and his creative initiative Miner League. In addition to his solo work, he is a member of Reach Records' hip hop collective 116 Clique.
Derek Johnson, Jr., better known by his stage name Derek Minor and former stage name PRo, is an American Christian rapper, singer, songwriter, record producer, entrepreneur, actor, and screenwriter. He co-founded the hip-hop record label Reflection Music Group (RMG) with Doc Watson, and signed to Reach Records in a joint venture between the two labels in 2011. In 2012, Johnson announced that he had changed his stage name from Pro to Derek Minor. In 2014, he announced that as his two-album contract with Reach was complete, he would no longer be publishing releases through that label.
Reach Records is an American independent record label specializing in Christian hip hop. The label was founded in 2004 by Ben Washer and the hip-hop artist Lecrae. In addition to Lecrae, the Reach Records roster contains artists like Tedashii, Trip Lee, Andy Mineo, 1K Phew, WHATUPRG, Anike, Hulvey, Limoblaze, and Jackie Hill Perry. The hip-hop collective 116 operates under the label and consists primarily of the label's solo acts. The artists Sho Baraka, Derek Minor, Aha Gazelle, KB, and Gawvi were formerly signed to the label, and DJ Official was under the label until his death.
Travis Tremayne Tyler, better known by the stage name Thi'sl is an American Christian hip hop producer and songwriter from St. Louis, Missouri. In 2007 Thi'sl was signed to the record label X-Hustler where he recorded three studio albums, After This House I Shall Live, Chronicles of an X-Hustler and Beautiful Monster. In 2012 he was featured on Lecrae's album Gravity which won a Grammy award.
Lisa Charise Brooks is an American urban contemporary gospel, traditional black gospel, and gospel music recording artist and musician. She started her music career, in 1986, with her quartet, Witness. Her solo music career began in 1997, while she has since released four solo studio albums, More Than You'll Ever Know in 1997, Lisa Page Brooks in 2001, Strong in 2009, and Ready in 2013. Three of those albums charted on the Billboard magazine charts.
Marcus Randell Cole is an American gospel musician and worship leader, Christian R&B, urban gospel and black gospel recording artist and singer. He started his music career, in 1996, with the gospel music group, Commissioned until 2018. He has released two studio albums, Chillin' Up in Heaven, in 1999, with Godson Records, and, Write My Song, in 2006, from PureSprings Gospel. The second album was his breakthrough release, entering the Billboard magazine charts.
