The Governance Innovation Unit is a government agency in Bangladesh responsible for the using innovations to improve transparency and public accountability of government services. [1] [2] The Chief of the Governance Innovation Unit is Dr Gowher Rizvi. [3]

History

The Governance Innovation Unit was formed by government of Bangladesh in 2012. It is under the supervision of Prime Minister's Office. [4] The Unit proposed created a draft law that would provide entry level officers with subsidized apartments and low interest loans in October 2016. [5] It is also responsible for planning the completion of the Sustainable Development Goals. [6] The unit also funds scientific research in Bangladesh. [7] It also carries out campaigns against child marriage in Bangladesh. [8]

The Wall Street Journal described him as a "fierce critic of the government". He was arrested after a leaked conversion where he was asked if he would agree to talk to an army officer who was not named.

The 2018 Bangladesh Quota Reform Movement was a students' movement demanding reforms in policies regarding recruitment in the Bangladesh government services. Bangladesh Sadharon Chhatra Odhikar Songrokkhon Parishad initiated movement initially began in Shahbag and on Dhaka University campus on 17 February 2018, and eventually spread country-wide by 8 April 2018. A series of public protests in Bangladesh advocating improved road safety were held from 29 July to 10 August 2018. They were sparked by the deaths of two high-school students in Dhaka struck by a bus operated by an unlicensed driver who was racing to collect passengers. The incident impelled students to demand safer roads and stricter traffic laws, and the demonstrations rapidly spread throughout Bangladesh.
