Government dental college and hospital Srinagar is government affiliated college for dentistry and super specialty hospital for dental care in Srinagar. It is the oldest dentistry hospital in the Kashmir valley serving as premier institute to pursue in the field of BDS and MDS. The college and hospital are both affiliated to Kashmir Universities for all certifications and academic purposes and approved by dental council of India. [1] . The college was established in the year 1986 by the Govt of India and is considered one of the reputed institutions in the dental care in the country. [2] Over 2.5 lac people visit the hospital for dental care each year which would increase in coming years as facilities are upgraded each year to meet the patient demands. [3]

History

The college was established in 1986 by the cumulative efforts of the state and central governments as there was no dental hospital and college existing in the Kashmir valley at that time. Due to its proximity to the Government Medical College and SMHS Hospital, patients could take care of their overall health at once place, from dentistry to other physical conditions. The college was commended by the senior government officials for providing best health care to the people of Jammu and Kashmir from time to time. [4] . The construction of the campus began to flourish since 1994 and BDS capacity was increased from 20 to 50 in 2004. The admission follows the process of entrance exams which are selected through NEET. [5] . Many free oral health camps are organised by the college to facilitate healthcare awareness for general public from time to time. [6] [7]

Departments

The College has various departments, including Conservative Dentistry & Endodontics, Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, Oral Medicine & Radiology, Oral Pathology, Orthodontics, Pedodontics, Periodontology, Prosthodontics, Anaesthesiology, and Public Health Dentistry. These departments support both undergraduate and postgraduate (MDS) programs in the college. some are categorized in Clinical and Surgical Departments while others as Diagnostic and Preventive Departments. [8] Besides the library in the college is one the biggest libraries of the dental study material in the UT of J&K. [9]

Tobacco Cessation Clinic

The college is the only facility in the Kashmir valley to have tobacco cessation clinic which was commenced in 2025. Due to the ongoing mission to promote healthier lifestyles and combat tobacco use globally, the clinic was started off to facilitate the patients to desist from the use of tobacco entirely. [10]
