Gramm-Bernstein Company, also known as Gramm Motor Car Co. and Gramm Truck Co., was an automobile company in Lima, Ohio in the early 20th century. The company was an early manufacturer of power wagons and advertised 1, 2, 3, and 5 ton models with "any style of body desired". [1] Vehicles were sold through the Willys-Overland Motors. [1] Gramm received a $1,225,000 order "for trucks said to be for commercial purposes in Great Britain" in 1916. [2] A manufacturing plant was designed by Lima architectural firm McLaughlin & Hulsken. [3]

History

From 1930 to 1935, the Ahrens-Fox Fire Engine Company of Cincinnati, Ohio, had been building its smaller fire engines on chassis made by LeBlond-Schacht Truck Company, also of Cincinnati. But by 1935, Depression-weakened Ahrens-Fox owed Schacht so much money for chassis already supplied, that Schacht refused to supply any more truck chassis to AF. Ahrens-Fox the turned to Gramm Trucks of Lima, Ohio, to supply radiators, hoods, and fenders for its smaller fire trucks. Schacht Trucks bought-out Ahrens-Fox Company in 1936, and AF again began to build fire engines on Schacht chassis. But the Ahrens-Fox with Gramm sheet metal continued to be available until 1939. All of the smaller Ahrens-Fox apparatus of 1939-1940 were on Schacht chassis; Gramm/Ahrens-Fox models were no longer available starting in mid 1939. Schacht and Ahrens-Fox both ceased production of new vehicles in 1940, although Ahrens-Fox resumed production in 1946 and continued to be made until 1958 (but using their own custom chassis, no longer using Gramm or Schacht as suppliers).

From 1937 to 1939, the Bickle Fire Engine Company of Woodstock, Ontario, built fire engines using very similar sheet metal designs to those that Ahrens-Fox was using at that time, and as with Ahrens-Fox, these radiators, hoods, and fenders were also supplied to Bickle by Gramm Trucks of Lima, Ohio. Bickle had been Ahrens-Fox's Canadian sales and service agency from 1923 to 1936; starting in 1936, Bickle was the Canadian sales and service agency for Seagrave Corporation fire engines of Columbus, Ohio.

The Gramm/Ahrens-Fox fire engines had Hercules motors and either Northern or Hale fire pumps, while the Gramm/Bickles used Seagrave motors and pumps. Bickle also made fire engines on Seagrave's own chassis, and on various other commercial truck chassis, at the same time that they were making Gramm/Bickles.

Walt McCall of Windsor, Ontario, Ed Hass of Sacramento, California, and the late Bob Johnson of Peoria, Illinois (the latter was an Ahrens-Fox fire engine salesman from 1923 to 1939) provided the research about the Ahrens-Fox and Bickle connections with Gramm Trucks.

Pierce Manufacturing is a U.S. company based in Appleton, Wisconsin that manufactures customized fire and rescue apparatus and a wholly owned subsidiary of Oshkosh Corporation. The company was founded in 1913 by Humphrey Pierce and his son Dudley as the Pierce Auto Body Works Inc., and concentrated on building custom truck bodies for the Ford Model T. Superior Coach was a coachbuilder in the American automotive industry. Founded in 1909 as the Garford Motor Truck Company, Superior is best known for constructing bodies for professional cars (hearses) and school buses. Following major downturns in both segments in the late 1970s, Superior was liquidated by its parent company in 1980. From 1925 to 1980, the company was based in Lima, Ohio.

The Ford line of cars was updated in 1937 with one major change — the introduction of an entry-level 136 CID (2.2 L) V8 in addition to the popular 221 CID (3.6 L) flathead V8. The model was a refresh of its predecessor, the Model 48, and was the company's main product. It was redesigned more thoroughly in 1941. At the start of production, it cost US$850. The Ford Line bore several model numbers during this period: For domestic 1937 production in the United States Ford Model Numbers for 85 hp V-8 equipped cars was Model 78 and 60 hp V-8 cars was Model 74. Models 81A and 82A in 1938, and Models 91A and 92A in 1939.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">1941 Ford</span> Motor vehicle

The Ford car was thoroughly updated in 1941, in preparation for a time of unpredictability surrounding World War II. The 1941 design would continue in an aborted 1942 model year and would be restarted in 1946 and produced until 1948 when the more modern 1949 Fords were ready. During the initial year of this car, it evolved considerably. The front fenders came in three pieces, the theory being that small damages could be replaced easily. During the year, it evolved into two pieces with the lower front and back sections being joined. The hood risers changed, the early ones being the same as 1940 Fords, changing during the year to the better later version. The 1941 Convertible had no rear side windows, the only side windows being in the doors; in 1942, quarter windows were added so the rear occupants could see out. Five different coil/distributor arrangements were used during 1941, causing confusion for mechanics. Other variations were: two different positions for the generator, and three for the cooling fan — front of the crankshaft, front of the generator (rare) and on a bracket. This is thought to be the first Ford to offer a replaceable cartridge oil filter as an option. The two interior heaters were a "Southwind" gasoline burner, which had the advantage of keeping one warm in winter at drive-in movies, and a more ordinary hot-water type. Both had window defrosters. It had an excellent radio, which could consume the battery in about two hours. Electric windshield wipers were available in addition to the vacuum-powered wipers. Three different convertible power top mechanisms and two different header bar latching systems were used. Rear suspensions sometimes had a sway bar, most did not. It had excellent brakes and among the best handling of ordinary cars of the time. It served a transitional role in Ford’s lineup.

Schacht was an American marque of automobiles and High-wheelers from 1904 to 1913, in Cincinnati, Ohio. The Schacht Manufacturing Company, later renamed Schacht Motor Car Company produced over 9,000 automobiles. The company was reorganized as the G.A. Schacht Motor Truck Company in 1914 and production of trucks and fire trucks continued until 1938.

The electric fire engine is a fire engine with a water pump, used to distribute water to put out a fire, operated by an electric motor. Electric fire engines were first proposed in the 19th century to replace the steam pumpers used for firefighting. The electric motor was claimed to be simpler, cleaner, and faster in operation, would save money, and require less maintenance than the steam fire engine. Contemporary battery-operated models also exist.

The provenance of the firefighting vehicles date from 1841 to 1998. The fleet of vehicles was added to the New South Wales State Heritage Register on 25 February 2013.

The Welch Motor Company was an American automobile company headquartered in Chelsea, Michigan. It started in 1901 and continued production of luxury vehicles until 1911 when it merged with General Motors.
