Grand Atlantic were a Brisbane-based indie rock band, active from 2005 to 2013. They released three albums, This Is Grand Atlantic (May 2007), How We Survive (2009) and Constellations (2011).

History

In October 2005 Grand Atlantic formed at a coffee shop in Paddington, Brisbane. The band members were singer-guitarist Phil Usher, bass guitarist Sean Bower, guitarist Nigel Smith and drummer Scott Mullane. Bower, Mullane and Usher had played together in Tonjip, while this was the first group for Smith. Usher had previously been the drummer for Australian Christian pop rock band, Beanbag from 1996 to 2003. [1] [2]

In 2006 Grand Atlantic recorded an extended play, Smoke and Mirrors, for Melbourne label, Popboomerang. The ‘2006 Drum Media Writers Poll’ listed it as one of the top ten EPs of the Year and the title track's stop-motion video screened nationally via Rage and Channel V. That year they placed third in the ‘Rock Category’ of the 2006 International Songwriting Competition (ISC) with their track "Coolite", while "Wonderful Tragedy" garnered an ISC Honourable Mention in the main Performance category; both are tracks from their debut album.

In May 2007 the group released their debut album, This Is Grand Atlantic, via Popboomerang with distribution by MGM Distribution, [3] which again was well received. The group toured Australian in support of the album. [4] Richard MacFarlane of Mess+Noise felt "the sounds within are meticulous, and here craftsmanship does not equal engaging listening... because of a naff sort of 90s Britpop-esque that's so mixed to down to the middle that it's almost basking in its own solidness – a knowledge of lightweight rock conventions and how to pull no punches." [5] MediaSearch's Chris Brady opined that "[it] is the sound of a band hinting at great potential. At their best, this Brisbane foursome successfully channel the spirit of sixties psychedelia, with Pepper-esque horns and soaring Pet Sounds harmonies." [6] In that year they toured the East Coast of Australia three times and performed at the Adelaide Fuse Festival and BigSound conferences.

Grand Atlantic's second album, How We Survive, was widely praised upon release in April 2009. This was especially the case in the US where the band made a significant impact at radio. Again, it was produced by the band, but mixed by Australian producer Magoo. It also saw a change in line-up, with new drummer Mat Von Diehm and guitarist Morgan Hann replacing Mullane and Smith.

Upon release the new line-up toured the album in Australia but it received more attention in the US. The single “She’s a Dreamer” attracted airplay at over 50 US radio stations. In March 2010, Grand Atlantic played their first 15-date US tour across America and Canada after invitations to perform at SXSW and Canadian Music Week. This was followed by further Australian dates and a brief 4-date Japan tour.

In early 2011, the band travelled to Seacliff Lunatic Asylum, an abandoned psychiatric hospital near Dunedin, New Zealand. With producer Dale Cotton they recorded their third album, Constellations, which was self-released. [7] Justin Donnelly of The Metal Forge observed that it was "a little different from what we have come expect from the Grand Atlantic. The pop influences that have infiltrated their former work is still very much evident within the band's eleven new tunes, but it's the overall darker and heavier sounding shoegazer influences that masks the pop/rock side of the band's sound that really dominates the overall feel." [7]

In March 2011 Grand Atlantic returned to the US for a second appearance at SXSW, playing 17 dates in three weeks on both the East and West coasts. The tour resulted in significant licensing outcomes for TV use of their music, including a song on Gossip Girl and promotional spots for the USA Channel.

The "Constellations" album denoted a change in the band's musical style.

Beanbag was an Australian Christian Alternative Metal band which formed in 1995 in Brisbane and broke up in late 2002. The group consisted of Phillip "Hirvy" Hirvela on bass guitar, Michael Mullins on lead guitar, Hans "Hunz" Van Vliet on lead vocals, and Phil Usher on drums. In 1999 the group relocated to Nashville, Tennessee. Steven Lewis-Driver assumed the bass position when Hirvy left the band in early 2002. Jesse Palmer also filled in on guitar after Mullins returned to Australia a couple months before the band's demise. They released two albums on United States label, Inpop Records, Free Signal (2000) and Welladjusted (2001).

Volbeat are a Danish rock band formed in Copenhagen in 2001. They play a fusion of rock and roll, heavy metal, and rockabilly. Their current line-up consists of vocalist and rhythm guitarist Michael Poulsen, drummer Jon Larsen, and bassist Kaspar Boye Larsen. The band is signed to Dutch label Mascot Records and has released eight studio albums and one DVD. In-Flight Safety is a Canadian indie rock band formed in 2003. In-Flight Safety was nominated for a 2007 Juno Award for Video of the Year for "Coast Is Clear". They are currently based in Halifax, Nova Scotia. The group consists of vocalist and guitarist John Mullane, drummer Glen Nicholson and is rounded out by friends who appear in the live show. In-Flight Safety released their second full-length album We Are an Empire, My Dear 27 January 2009 in Canada on their own label Night Danger. The band released their third full-length album, Conversationalist on 9 September 2014.

Screamfeeder is an Australian indie guitar pop group formed in Brisbane in 1991. The band's original line-up was composed of drummer Tony Blades, bassist/vocalist Kellie Lloyd and vocalist/guitarist Tim Steward. In 1995, Dean Shwereb replaced Blades on drums. Darek Mudge later joined on lead guitar from 2001 to 2005, and eventually rejoined in 2014. Screamfeeder have released seven studio albums: Flour, Burn Out Your Name, Fill Yourself With Music (1995), Kitten Licks (1996), Rocks on the Soul (2000), Take You Apart (2003) and Pop Guilt (2017).

Hellyeah, stylized as HELLYEAH, is an American heavy metal supergroup formed in Dallas, Texas, in 2006. The band's last lineup consisted of lead vocalist Chad Gray, guitarists Christian Brady and Tom Maxwell, bassist Kyle Sanders, and drummer Roy Mayorga. The idea to form a supergroup originated in 2000 on the Tattoo the Earth tour, although plans were constantly put on hold due to scheduling conflicts. Colin Craig Hatchman is an Australian rock musician who joined The Screaming Jets as their drummer during 2001–2004. In 2004 he joined Nathan Cavaleri in Dirty Skanks, Hatchman broke the Guinness Book of World Records as 'Loudest Drummer in the World' on 4 August 2006, the sound was measured at 137.2 dBA.

Sonic Porno are an alternative rock band from Queensland, Australia. Formed in Brisbane, Queensland in 2005 by vocalist and guitarist Tone Sonic as a two-piece grunge band, the band have evolved into an energetic and hard-working act. The band are currently signed to Alien Punk Records.

The Masters Apprentices are an Australian rock band fronted by Jim Keays on lead vocals, which originally formed as The Mustangs in 1964 in Adelaide, South Australia, relocated to Melbourne, Victoria, in February 1967 and attempted to break into the United Kingdom market from 1970 before disbanding in 1972. Their popular Australian singles are "Undecided", "Living in a Child's Dream", "5:10 Man", "Think About Tomorrow Today", "Turn Up Your Radio" and "Because I Love You". The band launched the career of bass guitarist Glenn Wheatley, who later became a music industry entrepreneur and an artist talent manager for both Little River Band and John Farnham.
