GEAS (Grand Edinburgh Adventuring Society, also known as GEAS Roleplaying Society or Edinburgh University Roleplaying Society) is the roleplaying society of the University of Edinburgh. The society plays host annually to Conpulsion, Scotland's oldest, largest [1] gaming convention.
GEAS was founded in 1978 with a stated goal of "[fostering] the cause of all roleplaying games." [2] It gained a website in the early days of the Web (1993/1994), which by 1997 was reputedly "Europe's most popular roleplaying website", [3] and accounted for almost half the web traffic of the University of Edinburgh. By the time the GEAS Village (as it was known then) closed, sometime in September 2001, it had been the largest independent roleplaying website in the world, [4] primarily due to its use of then-cutting edge technology in combining graphics, archives of roleplaying material, and some of the world's first internet message boards.
In 1987, GEAS ran a convention titled Dungeon Aid to raise money for charity. The event proved very popular so became an annual fixture, renamed Big Con after a few years, then Conpulsion in 1995.

First Aid Africa is humanitarian charity that works in rural parts of south eastern Africa to provide sustainable equipment and education in first aid. The charity explains that 'a small amount of medical knowledge and equipment' can make a difference. He was awarded the 2011 James Croll Medal. He was awarded the Seligman Crystal by the International Glaciological Society in 2001. Between 2007 and 2011 he was General Secretary of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, of which he has been a Fellow since 1989. He was elected to membership of the Academia Europaea in 2022

Conpulsion is the oldest gaming convention in Scotland, hosted by the Edinburgh University Roleplaying Society (GEAS) annually in Teviot Student Union, Edinburgh. It predominantly features role-playing games and live action role-playing games, but also includes wargames, board games, collectible card games, and non-collectible card games. The convention also has a strong focus on giving money to charity, in a similar vein to many Irish conventions.
