Grant McPhee is a Scottish film director, cinematographer and writer. His films include the music documentaries Big Gold Dream , Teenage Superstars [1] [2] and the drama, Far From the Apple Tree [3] starring Sorcha Groundsell. He won the prestigious audience choice award in 2015 for his film Big Gold Dream at the 2015 edition of the Edinburgh International Film Festival. In television, he worked as a second unit director and cinematographer on Outlander .

He has written articles for The National, I News, Clash Music, Caught by the River, Louder Than War, Bella Caledonia and the books Hungry Beat (as co-writer) published by White Rabbit Books, Postcards From Scotland published by Omnibus Books and a soon to be released book on Glasgow’s 1990’s underground music scene. In 2022, he co-wrote the book, Hungry Beat, an oral history of Scottish Post-Punk music which was published by White Rabbit Books. This was followed by Postcards from Scotland 1980's and 1990's independent music scene. A second volume is planned which will explore Scotland's late 80s and 90's underground music scene, focussing on the 13th Note Club, Glasgow Music Collective and Belle and Sebastian. He is currently working on an upcoming project on the Rolling Stones manager Andrew Loog Oldham as well as leading on a series of films covering Liverpool’s post-punk music scene as well as the cities 60s, 70s and 80s cultural underground.

Digital hardcore is a fusion genre that combines hardcore punk with electronic dance music genres such as breakbeat, techno, and drum and bass while also drawing on heavy metal and noise music. Orange Juice were a Scottish jangle pop band founded in the Glasgow suburb of Bearsden as the Nu-Sonics in 1976. They became Orange Juice in 1979, and took inspiration by contemporary punk bands including Subway Sect, Television, and Buzzcocks but also 1960s acts, most notably the Byrds and the Velvet Underground. Musically, the band brought together styles and genres that often appeared incongruous, for example, country, disco and punk.

McKee had formerly been a member of a band named the Pretty Flowers with Duglas T. Stewart, Norman Blake, Janice McBride and Sean Dickson. Eugene Kelly had formerly played in the Famous Monsters.

The group have had a number of members, but currently consists of Stephen McRobbie, Katrina Mitchell, Tom Crossley, John Hogarty, Alison Mitchell and Suse Bear.

Indie pop is a music genre and subculture that combines guitar pop with DIY ethic in opposition to the style and tone of mainstream pop music. It originated from British post-punk in the late 1970s and subsequently generated a thriving fanzine, label, and club and gig circuit. Compared to its counterpart, indie rock, the genre is more melodic, less abrasive, and relatively angst-free. In later years, the definition of indie pop has bifurcated to also mean bands from unrelated DIY scenes/movements with pop leanings. Subgenres include chamber pop and twee pop.

BMX Bandits are a Scottish guitar pop band formed in Bellshill in 1986. Led by songwriter and lead vocalist Duglas T. Stewart, their music is heavily influenced by 1960s pop. They have shared members with numerous other local bands, including Teenage Fanclub and the Soup Dragons. BMX Bandits were a favourite band of Kurt Cobain, who said "If I could be in any other band, it would be BMX Bandits". In 2011, they were the subject of the documentary Serious Drugs: A Film About BMX Bandits.

Big Gold Dream is a 2015 film documenting the story of Scotland's post-punk scene, focusing on record labels Fast Product and Postcard Records. Directed by filmmaker Grant McPhee, the film's name is taken from the 1981 Fire Engines single of the same name, the final release on the Pop Aural label.

Teenage Superstars is a 2017 film about the Glasgow independent music scene between 1982 and 1992, focusing on the bands that emerged from in and around the city at this point including The Pastels, BMX Bandits, The Soup Dragons, Teenage Fanclub, The Vaselines, The Jesus and Mary Chain and Primal Scream. In doing so, the film also considers the early days of Creation Records and Stephen Pastel, David Keegan and Sandy McLean’s 53rd & 3rd record label. The film follows on chronologically from 2015's Big Gold Dream, also directed by Grant McPhee, with its title taken from The Vaselines song "Teenage Superstars".

Hungry Beat is a 2022 book published by white Rabbit Books and written by Grant McPhee and Douglas MacIntyre with Neil Cooper. It is an oral history of Scotland's post-punk scene, focussing on the record labels Fast Product and Postcard Records. The introduction was written by Ian Rankin.

Sophisticated Boom Boom are a Scottish girl group, initially forming in 1981 and disbanding in 1983. The five-piece all-girl act were formed from a group of pals and became a trailblazing mainstay in the early 1980s Glasgow music scene.

His Latest Flame are a Scottish girl group, initially forming in 1983 and disbanding in 1990. The all-girl act were originally formed from members of Sophisticated Boom Boom following the departure of their vocalist Libby McArthur in 1983.
