The Great Falls Americans were a junior ice hockey team based in Great Falls, Montana playing in the American Frontier Hockey League and the America West Hockey League from 1995 to 2003. They played at the Four Seasons Arena. The team won the league championship in 2000-2001. Notable players during the 2000-2001 AWHL hockey season include Pat Dwyer, Bobby Robins, Jon Volp, and David Printz. During this successful season, under the coaching of Swedish born Rikard Grönborg, the Americans won the AWHL championship, beating the Billings Bulls for the trophy.

He was previously an assistant coach for the Florida Panthers, Buffalo Sabres, New Jersey Devils, Minnesota Wild, Colorado Avalanche, and the San Jose Sharks. Head Coach, 2021 Canada U18 at world championships won gold beating Russia 5-3 in the gold medal game. Barr was born in Toronto, Ontario, but grew up in Edmonton, Alberta.

The Great Falls Americans were a junior ice hockey team in the Western Hockey League who played a portion of the 1979–80 WHL season. The team was a relocation of the 1978–79 Edmonton Oil Kings franchise, which had previously been the then-named Western Canada Hockey League's (WCHL) Flin Flon Bombers, from the 1967–68 through 1977–78 WCHL seasons. The Americans played at the Four Seasons Arena in Great Falls, Montana. The team only lasted 28 games of the WHL's 72-game season, winning only two games. After the WHL completed its season, the dormant Americans franchise relocated as the Spokane Flyers.

The America West Hockey League (AWHL) was a Tier II Junior A ice hockey league. The AWHL was formed in 1992 to offer junior ice hockey to the Rocky Mountain region of USA Hockey. It originally was called the American Frontier Hockey League (AFHL), and the name change to AWHL came in 1998. The AWHL merged with the North American Hockey League in 2003 and after the merger, the NAHL name was kept.

The players, ages 16–20, carry amateur status under Junior A guidelines and hope to earn a place on a Canadian major junior, collegiate or minor professional team.

The 2011–12 AWHL season was the first season for the newly formed American West Hockey League. The AWHL was formed in the summer of 2011 by teams breaking away from the Northern Pacific Hockey League (NorPac). The league shared a similar area as the former America West Hockey League that merged into the North American Hockey League in 2003. Bozeman, Billings, Great Falls, and Helena all had teams in the old AWHL.

Mike Corbett is an American ice hockey coach who was previously the head coach at Alabama–Huntsville Chargers from 2013 to 2020. Corbett played junior ice hockey for the Wisconsin Capitols of the United States Hockey League from 1990 until 1992 and college ice hockey at Denver from 1992 until 1997.

The 2013–14 AWHL season was the third and final season of the American West Hockey League. The regular season schedule ran from September 19, 2013, to March 8, 2014.
