Greater Binghamton FC (GBFC) was an American soccer team located in Binghamton, New York. The team was established in 2012.^[1]

Association football, more commonly known as football or soccer, is a team sport played with a spherical ball between two teams of eleven players. It is played by 250 million players in over 200 countries and dependencies, making it the world's most popular sport. The game is played on a rectangular field called a pitch with a goal at each end. The object of the game is to score by moving the ball beyond the goal line into the opposing goal.

Binghamton is a city in, and the county seat of, Broome County, New York, United States. It lies in the state's Southern Tier region near the Pennsylvania border, in a bowl-shaped valley at the confluence of the Susquehanna and Chenango Rivers. Binghamton is the principal city and cultural center of the Binghamton metropolitan area, home to a quarter million people. The population of the city itself, according to the 2010 census, is 47,376.

The Greater Binghamton Sports Complex is an air-supported dome in Union, New York. With over 125,000 square feet (11,600 m²) in enclosed area, it is the largest air-supported dome in the United States. The complex is located on Airport Road off Route 17 near the city of Binghamton, New York. The purpose of the structure is to house its full size soccer field. The complex contains two offices, a restaurant, cafeteria, and a party room. The skylight measuring 197’ 6” x 30’ 6 feet (1.8 m) allows natural light to enter the complex. The facility can house multiple sporting events at once and offers sports such as soccer, rugby union, lacrosse, baseball, and softball. There is also a driving range. The complex was also the 2009 home of the Binghamton Tiger Cats, a Women's Tackle Football team. By playing in the Complex the Tiger Cats became the first team to play indoors in the history of Women's Professional Football. The complex was engineered by Yeadon corporation and was inflated in under two weeks.

History

Greater Binghamton Futbol Club (GBFC) was founded in 2012 in Binghamton, New York to compete in the National Premier Soccer League (NPSL), the fourth tier of the American soccer pyramid and roughly equivalent with the USL Premier Development League (PDL). The team played their first game on May 13, 2012 a 2-2 draw away against AFC Cleveland.

The National Premier Soccer League (NPSL) is an American soccer league commonly recognized as being a fourth tier league although it has been given no official designation by U.S. Soccer. Although the league is officially affiliated to the United States Adult Soccer Association (USASA) and qualifies for the U.S. Open Cup through USASA channels, the league is generally considered to be at the fourth tier of competition in the United States soccer pyramid, behind Major League Soccer (MLS), the USL Championship (USLC), USL League One (USL1), and roughly equal with USL League Two (USL2). It is the successor of the Men's Premier Soccer League, a regional league originally based in the Western United States, which has now expanded nationwide to encompass teams from 29 states. The league's motto is "A National League with a Regional Focus". Some of the clubs are former NASL clubs.

AFC Cleveland was an American semi-professional soccer club based in the Cleveland suburb of Independence, Ohio. Founded in 2011 and playing its first season in 2012, the team spent six years in the fourth-tier National Premier Soccer League. After being expelled from the NPSL at the end of the 2017 season, AFC Cleveland folded and was replaced by Cleveland SC, who began play in the NPSL in 2018.

In their second season, GBFC finished 1st in the Keystone Conference during the regular season with a record of 10-2-2, going on to defeat the New York Red Bulls NPSL squad 2-1 in Binghamton,^[2] but ultimately losing to defending NPSL champions, FC LVU Sonic, 1-0 in the Northeast Region finals.^[3]

The 2010 National Premier Soccer League season is the 8th season of the NPSL. The season began on April 3, 2010, and ended with the NPSL Championship Game in August. Those three clubs eventually ended up forming the SPSL for that Fall, though that league would fold the following Spring.

Founded in 2009, the team plays in USL League Two, a national amateur league at the fourth tier of the American Soccer Pyramid. Emerald Force Soccer Club, Knoxville Force, was an American soccer club based in Knoxville, Tennessee, United States. The 2018 National Premier Soccer League season was part of the 106th season of FIFA-sanctioned soccer in the United States and the 16th season of the National Premier Soccer League (NPSL). Elm City Express was the defending champion.

Soccer has enjoyed longstanding popularity in Los Angeles. As of 2019 there are two professional soccer clubs in Los Angeles County that play in Major League Soccer: LA Galaxy and Los Angeles FC. The Los Angeles area is also home to two Division 2 professional teams in the United Soccer League: Orange County SC and LA Galaxy II, the reserve side of LA Galaxy, and many semi-professional clubs and leagues including the United Premier Soccer League, SoCal Premier League and National Premier Soccer League, among others. In 2019, two more professional teams, Cal FC and California United Strikers FC will join a new, unsanctioned, professional league called the NPSL Founders Cup.
