Gregory Keith Fields (born January 23, 1955) is an American former professional football defensive end who played in the National Football League (NFL) and United States Football League (USFL).

Early life

Fields was born and grew up in San Francisco, California and attended Mission High School. He was an All-City selection in football as a junior and senior. [1]

College career

Fields began his career at Hartnell College and was named All-Coast Conference as a sophomore before transferring to Grambling State for his final two years of eligibility. [2] [3]

Professional career

Fields was signed by the Detroit Lions as an undrafted free agent in 1978 but was cut during training camp. [4] He was signed by the Baltimore Colts and spent the 1979 and 1980 seasons playing mostly special teams and as a reserve on the defensive line. [3] Fields was cut by the Colts at the end of training camp in 1981. [5] Fields was signed by the Atlanta Falcons during the 1982 offseason but was cut during training camp. After being cut he locked himself in his hotel room and told Falcons' defensive line coach Jim Stanley that he refused to be released and did not leave training camp until the police were called. [6]

Essentially blackballed from the NFL, Fields was signed by the Los Angeles Express of the newly-formed United States Football League (USFL) in 1983. [3] He finished second on the team with ten sacks during the 1983 season. [7] Fields was cut at the end of training camp in 1984 and assaulted Express head coach John Hadl after being informed of his release. Fields was later signed by the San Antonio Gunslingers, where he played for two seasons until the USFL folded. [3] He recorded 16.5 quarterback sacks in his career at USFL. [8]

Randall Lee Van Divier is an American former professional football player who was an offensive lineman in the National Football League (NFL). Van Divier, who played at Anaheim High School, was a captain for the 1980 Pac-10 champion Washington Huskies, and was later selected by the Baltimore Colts as the 68th overall pick in the third round of the 1981 NFL draft. After playing in 16 games with one start, Van Divier was cut by the Colts prior to the 1982 NFL season. Van Divier then signed with the Los Angeles Raiders but did not see action during the season. In 1983, he was cut by the Raiders at the end of training camp, and went on to play for the Oakland Invaders of the United States Football League (USFL) during the league's 1984 season. Following the season, he was signed and released by both the New Jersey Generals and the Portland Breakers prior to the 1985 USFL season but did not play for either team. He was re-signed by the Los Angeles Raiders but suffered a broken leg during a 1985 preseason game and was placed on season-ending injured reserve. Van Divier returned in 1986 but was waived during training camp prior to the regular season.
