History

The company was founded in 1974 by Bernard and Maura Buckley, [2] Currently it is headed by their sons Michael and Brian Buckley. [1] The company announced 100 new jobs in 2019, bringing the total employees in the firm to 600 people. [3]

The company took over the waste collection business from South Dublin County Council in 2011, [4] making it one of the largest household recycling companies in Ireland. [4] In 2012, it took over the Dublin County Council waste collection [5] [6] and it serves over 500,000 customers in 12 local authorities in Ireland, as well as operating renewable business interests in 15 countries in Europe and Asia. [4]

In 2013 directors Michael and Brian Buckley were found guilty of failing to control emissions and odours coming from their main storage facility in Dublin, and sentenced to pay a fine along with legal costs and a contribution to two charities. [7]

In August 2016 Greyhound bought the domestic waste collection businesses from its rival Panda and Greenstar in a merger process. [8] As a part of Recycling in the Republic of Ireland the company is now investing €35 million into its commercial division. [3]

A 14-week industrial dispute in 2014 over pay cuts and redundancies ended with a settlement between the workers and the company, [1] [9] Greyhound workers’ elected representatives, and the SIPTU organisers involved in the dispute negotiated an agreement with management. [9]

Reverse logistics is for all operations related to the reuse of products and materials. It is "the process of moving goods from their typical final destination for the purpose of capturing value, or proper disposal. Remanufacturing and refurbishing activities also may be included in the definition of reverse logistics." Growing green concerns and advancement of green supply chain management concepts and practices make it all the more relevant. The number of publications on the topic of reverse logistics have increased significantly over the past two decades. The first use of the term "reverse logistics" in a publication was by James R. Stock in a White Paper titled "Reverse Logistics," published by the Council of Logistics Management in 1992. The concept was further refined in subsequent publications by Stock (1998) in another Council of Logistics Management book, titled Development and Implementation of Reverse Logistics Programs, and by Rogers and Tibben-Lembke (1999) in a book published by the Reverse Logistics Association titled Going Backwards: Reverse Logistics Trends and Practices. The reverse logistics process includes the management and the sale of surplus as well as returned equipment and machines from the hardware leasing business. Normally, logistics deal with events that bring the product towards the customer. In the case of reverse logistics, the resource goes at least one step back in the supply chain. For instance, goods move from the customer to the distributor or to the manufacturer.

Recycling in the Republic of Ireland

Rates of household recycling in Ireland have increased dramatically since the late 1990s. The Irish Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is the agency with overall responsibility for environmental protection in the Republic of Ireland and monitors rates of recycling in Ireland along with other measures of environmental conditions in Ireland. The EPA, along with Repak, the principal organisation for packaging recycling in Ireland, report on recycling rates each year. In 2012 Ireland’s MSW recycling rate was 34%, while the rate of packaging recycling reached 79%. The amount of municipal waste generated per person per year in the Republic of Ireland has fallen significantly in recent years. This figure remains above the European Union annual municipal waste average of 503 kg per person, however. Each local council in Ireland has considerable control over recycling, so recycling practices vary to some extent across the country. Most waste that is not recycled is disposed of in landfill sites.
