The Streatham Exiles, playing on Sunday mornings at Tooting Bec Common, claimed to have originated the game of Grice Hockey c. 1957, arising out of many of the participants interested in Ice Hockey, and organising trips to Ice hockey matches. [1]
The first match in a newly formed South London Grice Hockey League was played on 12 April 1959 where Streatham Exiles drew with Tooting Bec Lions in a one-all draw. [2]
Following the closure of Sports Stadium Brighton ice rink c. 1965 [3] the Grice Hockey became popular in Brighton on the south coast with the setting down of pitches in several local parks. [4]
The game was variant of Ice Hockey but played on grass, with a ball rather than a puck, and based on Ice Hockey rules. [5] [6]

Hillcroft School was a boys' secondary school in South London. In 1960, it was established in Tooting Bec, being built on playing fields of, and adjacent to, the premises of Bec School. The initial complement of pupils were drawn from Hillbrook Secondary School in Hillbrook Road, Tooting, and Estreham Secondary School in Penwortham Road, Streatham. Hillbrook and Estreham then closed.
Sports Stadium Brighton or S. S. Brighton was a former venue at Brighton initially being a swimming pool and subsequently an ice-rink. It was also known as Brighton Sports Stadium for much of its existence.
