Gulfam is a 1961 Pakistani costume film directed by S. Suleman in his directorial debut. [1] [2]

Contents

It was produced by Darpan under his production banner Darpan Productions, who also played the lead role alongside Musarrat Nazir. The supporting actors include Nazar, S. Suleman and Talish. The music was composed by Rashid Attre with lyrics by Habib Jalib and Tanvir Naqvi. [3]

The film received a Nigar Award for 'Best Editing' in 1961. [4]

Plot

The story of Gulfam is based on the backdrop of the conflict between the Muslims and the Roman nation. The plot primarily revolves around the romance of a brave young man with his bedouin beloved one.

Release and box office

Gulfam was released on 29 December 1961. The film celebrated golden jubilee at the box office with a theatrical run of more than 50 weeks. [5] [2]

Awards

The film received a Nigar Award for 'Best Editing' for M. Akram. [6] [4]

Impact

The commercial success of the film established the career of director S. Suleman due to which he went on to become one of the top directors of Pakistani cinema in the following years. The film became a trendsetter in the production of Costume films in the 1960s which continued till the mid-1970s. [2]

Noel Dias, better known as Saleem Raza, was a Pakistani playback singer. He converted to Islam and started his singing career from Lahore, Pakistan, quickly gaining popularity. Raza was a classically- trained singer and was more famous for singing sad songs. Raza's career suffered due to the rise of singer Ahmed Rushdi in the late 1950s. He left playback singing in 1966 as he lost his popularity with the film composers and moved to Canada where he died in 1983.

It features Neelo, Alauddin, Ejaz Durrani, Saqi and Nasira as protagonist characters. It is based on the life of Zarqa, a Palestinian dancer girl and a freedom activist, who killed herself for the liberation of Palestine involving Israeli-occupied territories and Palestinian liberation movement. It also addresses a real event of Neelo when she was forcibly invited by Nawab Malik Amir Mohammad Khan, the governor of West Pakistan to his office to perform a stage dance during the 1965's official visit of Mohammad Reza Pahlavi to Pakistan.

Farangi is a 1964 Pakistani Urdu film. It is directed by Khalil Qaiser and written by Riaz Shahid. It was the second film produced by Khalil Qaiser's newly found K. K. Productions. The film stars Sudhir, Shamim Ara and Agha Talish with Bahar Begum and Allauddin. Set in 1910s and 1920s at the time of British Raj, Farangi revolves around the battle of a Pashtun freedome fighter against the british army. The film was a golden jubilee success and features some memorable poems by Faiz Ahmad Faiz and Sahir Ludhianvi, with music composed by Rashid Attre. Ara and Talish's performances in the film were praised. At Nigar Awards 1964, it received four awards including Best Actress for Ara.

Shaam Dhalay is a Pakistani romance drama film directed and produced by Santosh Kumar. It was the only film that Kumar ever directed and produced. Kumar also played the lead role opposite Sabiha Khanum. The music of the film was composed by Rashid Attre.
