Johan Tertius "Gus" Theron (born 10 January 1975) is a South African former professional rugby union player. Theron played mainly on the wing and at centre.

Early life

Gus Theron was born in Robertson in the Western Cape Province of South Africa, about 160 km (99 mi) northeast of Cape Town. He attended Robertson Primary School and Robertson Secondary School. After school he attended the University of Stellenbosch. In 1998, 2000 and 2006 he played for Maties, the university's team that competed in the annual club championships. [1]

Professional career

1998–2000

Gus Theron started playing for Western Province in the first season of the Vodacom Cup in 1998. During that same year he made his debut in the Currie Cup for Western Province.

In 1999 and 2000 he again played Vodacom Cup rugby for Western Province, but was also selected for the Stormers squad for the Super 12 competition. After the Super Rugby campaign was completed Theron continued his rugby in Cape Town, playing for Western Province in the Currie Cup. He did not enjoy a lot of game time, with Springboks Breyton Paulse and Pieter Rossouw being the first choice wings for Western Province at the time.

2001

At the start of the 2001 season, Stormers coach, Gert Smal released him to the Sharks in an attempt to gain more game time. He started in three Super 12 games for the Sharks and played in a further four, coming off the replacements bench. After the Super 12 season, he was back in Cape Town to play for Western Province in the Currie Cup. [2]

2002–2003

In 2002 and 2003, Theron was again part of the Western Province Vodacom Cup squad. In 2002 he also made a return to the Stormer's Super Rugby squad and formed part of Western Province's Currie Cup squad later in the year. In 2003 Springbok coach Rudolf Straeuli selected Theron in the 28-man Springbok squad for the away leg of the 2003 Tri Nations Series. This was a controversial selection as Theron did not have a particularly good Super 12 campaign. [3] He was due to make his Springbok debut against Australia on 2 August 2003 at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane. [4] Unfortunately he had to withdraw from the game due to a hamstring injury [5] and was never again selected for the Springboks. [6]

2004–2006

From 2004 to 2006 Theron was a regular in Western Province's Vodacom Cup and Currie Cup squads. He also featured in a number of Super Rugby games for the Stormers. In total, Theron played 130 games for the Stormers and Western Province. [7]

Christoffel Johannes van der Linde is a South African former professional rugby union player and currently the scrum coach at French Top 14 sideMontpellier. He played first class rugby between 2002 and 2015 in South Africa, Ireland, England and France and also made 75 test matches for South Africa, which included winning the 2007 Rugby World Cup. His usual playing position was prop.

Johan "Rassie" Erasmus is a South African rugby union coach and former player. He was the head coach of the South African national team from 2018 to the end of their 2019 World Cup campaign, doubling up on his duties as the first ever SARU Director of Rugby, to which he was appointed towards the end of 2017. Christopher Selborne Boome is a South African former professional rugby union player who has made 20 appearances for the South African national rugby union team, the Springboks. He represented Northampton Saints and Montferrand overseas and had 2 spells in Super Rugby with the Stormers franchise.

McNeil Hendricks, also known as "Maccie", is a former South African rugby union player who played primarily as a wing. He starred in the movie Invictus, in which he played the role of Chester Williams.

Ashley Johnson (rugby union) Rugby player

Ashley Johnson is a professional rugby union player-coach who plays and coaches for Birmingham Moseley in National League 1. He previously played for Free State Cheetahs at provincial level, Cheetahs in the Super Rugby, Wasps in Premiership Rugby and the Springboks. His usual position is hooker, having converted from backrow whilst with Wasps. His first game for the Springboks was in 2009 on tour to the British Isles, but he only earned his first Test Caps in the 2011 Tri-Nations series.

Coenraad Victor Oosthuizen, nicknamed 'Coenie' or 'Shrek', is a professional rugby union player for Sale Sharks in the English Premiership. He previously represented the Free State Cheetahs and Sharks in the Currie Cup, the Cheetahs and Sharks in Super Rugby and also was chosen for the Springboks squad in 2010, 2011 and 2012, making his test debut in the first test against England in Durban in 2012.

Demetri Catrakilis Rugby player

Demetri Catrakilis is a former South African professional rugby union player for the Southern Kings in the Pro14. He previously played for Premiership side Harlequins, Top 14 side Montpellier in France, for the Stormers and the Southern Kings in Super Rugby, for Western Province in the Currie Cup and Vodacom Cup competition and for the UCT Ikey Tigers in the Varsity Cup.

Conrad Fritz Hoffmann is a South African rugby union player, who most recently played with the Sharks. His regular position is scrum-half.

Steven Kitshoff is a South African rugby union rugby player. His playing position is loosehead prop. He represents the South Africa national team and the Stormers in Super Rugby, having previously played for Bordeaux in the French Top 14 and Western Province in the Currie Cup.

Pieter Willem Gabriel Rossouw is a South African former professional rugby player and current coach. Rossouw played wing for Western Province in the Currie Cup and the Stormers in the Super Rugby competition. He played a total of 43 times for the Springboks, making him one of the most capped Springbok wingers after South Africa's readmission to international rugby. He was also one of South Africa's most prolific try-scoring wingers, post-isolation, with only Breyton Paulse(26) and Bryan Habana(53) scoring more tries. He is 7th on the all-time try-scoring list for the Springboks. Rossouw is currently the backline coach of the Bulls in Super rugby and the Blue Bulls in the Currie Cup. He was known as "Slaptjips", apparently because the sight of his running legs was like potato chips slapping together. Pieter is the older brother of Chris Rossouw, who played flyhalf for Western Province and the Free State Cheetahs.

Dean Bradley Hall is a South African former professional rugby player. He played on the wing. He played the majority of his career for the Johannesburg based teams, the Golden Lions in the Currie Cup and Vodacom Cup and the Cats in Super Rugby. Later in his career he moved to Durban and played for the Sharks in the Currie Cup, the Natal Wildebeest in the Vodacom Cup and the Sharks in Super Rugby. He was also capped thirteen times for the Springboks and scored four test tries. His career was hampered with injury and he never reached his full potential. He was quite large for a wing, but in the wake of Jonah Lomu's sensation at the 1995 Rugby World Cup, it was hoped that Dean Hall would become the Springbok's massive wing.

Marthinus "Tinus" Linee was a South African rugby player. Linee played predominantly at centre. He played all his provincial rugby for Western Province. He represented Western Province and the Stormers in Super Rugby. He played nine tour games for the Springboks between 1993 and 1994, but never played in a test for South Africa.
