Gustav Fischer was an American politician who served as Sheriff of Cook County,Illinois from 1868 until he absconded to parts unknown with his mistress in December 1869,leaving behind his family and a number of disgruntled creditors. His departure caused a legal dispute over the right of succession for the office of County Sheriff,and he was ultimately succeeded by Benjamin L. Cleaves,the Cook County Coroner in April 1870. Richard Buell Ogilvie was an American attorney and law enforcement officer who served as the 35th governor of Illinois and served from 1969 to 1973. A wounded combat veteran of World War II,he became known as the mafia-fighting sheriff of Cook County,Illinois,in the 1960s before becoming governor.
John Lourie Beveridge was the 16th Governor of Illinois,serving from 1873 to 1877. He succeeded the recently elected Richard J. Oglesby,who resigned to accept a Senate seat. Beveridge previously served in the Army during the American Civil War,becoming colonel of the 17th Illinois Cavalry in 1864. He was brevetted to brigadier general in March 1865.
The Cook County Democratic Party is an American county-level political party organization which represents voters in 50 wards in the city of Chicago and 30 suburban townships of Cook County. The organization has dominated Chicago politics since the 1930s. It relies on an organizational structure of a ward or township committeeperson to elect candidates. At the height of its influence under Richard J. Daley in the 1960s when political patronage in employment was endemic in American cities,it was one of the most powerful political machines in American history. By the beginning of the 21st century the party had largely ceased to function as a machine due to the legal dismantling of the patronage system under the Shakman Decrees issued by the federal court in Chicago. William Henry Hinrichsen was a U.S. Representative from Illinois. Hinrichsen was Sheriff of Morgan County from 1880 to 1882. He afterwards turned to publishing interests,owning the Illinois Courier and Quincy Herald. Hinrichsen became involved with the Democratic Party in 1888,eventually rising to the position of Secretary of State of Illinois in 1892. During his term,he was elected chairman of the state Democratic Committee. He was then elected to the United States House of Representatives and served one term. He briefly edited the Cincinnati Enquirer and spent the rest of his life writing.
The Cook County Jail,located on 96 acres in South Lawndale,Chicago,Illinois,is operated by the Sheriff of Cook County. It is sometimes referred to as California or Hotel California,as its address is on California Avenue. A city jail has existed on this site since after the Great Chicago Fire of 1871,but major County prisoners were not generally collocated here until closure of the old Hubbard Street Criminal Court Building and jail in 1929. Since then,a 1920s neoclassical and art deco courthouse for the criminal division of the Cook County Circuit Court has operated at the South Lawndale complex.

Elections were held in Cook County,Illinois,on November 5,1946. Republicans took control of most county offices and occupied both seats of the Board of Appeals,although Democrats retained their majority in the Board of Commissioners. The Republican landslide reflected similar trends in state and federal elections at the time but was nevertheless unexpected. It resulted in the resignation of Democratic leader Edward Joseph Kelly and ultimately the end of his tenure as Mayor of Chicago. Republicans failed to capitalize on this victory in the following year's Chicago mayoral election,which was won by Democrat Martin Kennelly.
