History

The school first opened its doors in 1971 as a Junior Secondary School with an enrolment of 670 students in grades 7 through 9. The school had as its first principal Miss Ada L. Osbourne with an academic staff of 17 teachers operating a straight day system. With the implementation of a new level of the educational system, grade 10 programs were introduced[ when? ]. In order to adequately accommodate the flow of students, the school adopted the shift system. With the rapid growth and development of the school in the North–East St. Catherine region it became necessary to change the name to Guy's Hill New Secondary School.

As the grade ten programmes expanded, a two-year skills training programme was implemented and grade 11 was added. These skills were carpentry and joinery, needlework, food and nutrition, electrical installation, childcare, art and craft, and life Ssills. It became relevant at this point in the life of the institution to introduce the work experience programme. This created an on- the-job training within the private and public existence. One of the positives of the work experience is that it is often the source of employment for the students upon graduating.

In 1977 the school once again change its name to Guy's Hill Secondary School. In 1988 the first batch of schools to be upgraded to high school included the school and the school name was changed to the Guy's Hill High School. During the same year an inaugural set of common entrance students were placed in the school.

The Greek educational system is mainly divided into three levels: primary, secondary and tertiary, with an additional post-secondary level providing adult vocational training. Primary education is divided into kindergarten preschool lasting one or two years, and primary school spanning six years. Secondary education comprises two stages: the compulsory lower secondary education has a 3-year Gymnasio school, after which students can attend upper secondary education has a 3-year Lykeion school. Higher Education (tertiary) is provided by Universities and specialist Academies which primarily cater for the military. Undergraduate university programs typically last 4 years. The postgraduate last 1 to 2 years for Master's degree level and 3 to 6 years for Doctorate's degree level. All levels are overseen by the Ministry of Education, Research and Religious Affairs. The Ministry exercises centralized control over state schools, by prescribing the curriculum, appointing staff and controlling funding. Private schools also fall under the mandate of the Ministry, which exercises supervisory control over them. At a regional level, the supervisory role of the Ministry is exercised through Regional Directorates of Primary and Secondary Education, and Directorates of Primary and Secondary Education operate in every Prefecture. Tertiary institutions are nominally autonomous, but the Ministry is responsible for their funding, and the distribution of students to undergraduate courses. Currently, the Greek government only recognizes the degree programs offered by the state-run universities although there are several private universities and colleges offering degree programs that are validated and overseen by American, British and other European universities. The Greek government is pressured to recognize these overseas programs.

Education in Ghana

Education in Ghana was mainly informal, and based on apprenticeship before the arrival of European settlers, who introduced a formal education system addressed to the elites. Pre-Independent Ghana was known as the Gold Coast. The economy of pre-colonial Gold Coast was mainly dependent on subsistence farming where farm produce was shared within households and members of each household specialized in providing their household with other necessities such as cooking utilities, shelter, home, clothing and furnitures. Trade with other households was therefore practised in a very small scale. This has made economic activities in pre-colonial Gold Coast a family institution/customs; family-owned and family-controlled. As such, there was no need for employment outside the household that would have otherwise called for discipline(s), value(s) and skill(s) through a formal education system. Pre-colonial Gold Cost therefore practised an informal education (apprenticeship) until it was colonized and its economy became a hybrid of subsistence and formal economy.
