Rear Admiral Handunnetti Rannulu Amaraweera, WV, VSV, USP, RWP, RSP, DSP, RCDS (UK), Psc (USA). [1] is a former Director Operations Sri Lanka Navy. [2]

Early life

Amaraweera was educated at Nalanda College, Colombo. He was a keen cricketer and played for the Nalanda first XI team. Some of his teammates were Lalith Kaluperuma and Eastman Narangoda. [3] Amaraweera's brothers former Minister H. R. Piyasiri and former Member of parliament H. R. Wimalasiri too played cricket for Nalanda. [4] [5]

Military career

After completing education at Nalanda, Amaraweera joined Sri Lanka Navy in 1969 as a Cadet Officer intake one at NMA and later graduated from Naval Military Academy (NMA)- Trincomalle Sri Lanka was commissioned as a Sub Lieutenant. Staff College Course at US Naval War College, Newport RI, United States and Royal College of Defence Studies United Kingdom. During his Naval career, Amaraweera had held some key appointments such as Senior Officer Northern Naval Area, Commander Northern Naval Area,Commander Western Naval Area, Commander of the Southern Naval, Director Naval Operations, Director Naval Personal & Training. area, [6] commander of the Western Naval area. Founding father & the chief architect of Sri Lanka Navy Special Boat squadron. [7] After retirement at present, Rear Admiral H.R. Amaraweera is the Managing Director of Sri Lanka Land Reclamation and Development Corporation (LRDC) Security Services. [8]


2001 - Rear Admiral HR Amaraweera was named Senior Naval Officer Commanding Northern Naval Area when Jaffna peninsula came under heavy LTTE resistance and in the verge of complete withdrawal of Sri Lanka armed forces. After ceasing operations at the Palali Air force base the Air Force assets were moved to Kareinagar Naval Base under the Command of Rear Admiral HR Amaraweera. The KKS was the only life line for the Sri Lankan Force. Due to Rear Admiral HR Amaraweera’s leadership and timely actions averted a total withdrawal of Sri Lankan Armed Forces from the Jaffna penensula despite government of Sri Lanka and top brass in Colombo insisting on sending merchant vessels to KKS harbor.

Operation Rivirasa 1995 - 1996. Commodore H.R Amaraweera as Commander Northern Naval Area was responsible for maintaining uninterrupted logistical supply route (Northern Seas) midst heavy enemy resistance.

Operation Balavegaya 1991 : Operation Balavegaya was a combined military operation launched by the Sri Lankan military in Jaffna, the largest amphibious assault in its history. Operation Balavegaya was launched in response to the siege of Elephant Pass by the LTTE. Capt. H.R. Amaraweera, who commanded the flotilla of the landing force which landed troops under stiff resistance with the fire power of Naval Gun boats and Fast Attack Crafts.

The Sea Tigers was the naval wing of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam during the Sri Lankan Civil War. It was founded in 1984. The Sea Tigers had a number of small but effective suicide bomber vessels. During its existence it had gained a reputation as a capable adversary for the Sri Lankan Navy. During the civil war, the Sea Tigers had sunk at least 29 Sri Lankan small inshore patrol boats, 20 Dvora-class fast patrol boats, 3 gunboats, 2 Large surveillance command ships, and one freighter.

Eelam War II is the name given to the second phase of armed conflict between Sri Lankan military and the separatist Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam. The war started after the failure of peace talks between the Premadasa government and the LTTE. This phase of the war was initiated by the LTTE who massacred almost 600 Sinhalese and Muslim police personnel after they were ordered by the Premadasa government to surrender to the LTTE. The truce was broken on June 10, 1990 when the LTTE in October expelled all the 28,000 Muslims residing in Jaffna.

Admiral of the Fleet Wasantha Kumar Jayadeva Karannagoda, RSP, VSV, USP, MRIN, MNI is a Sri Lankan naval officer. He served as the Commander of the Sri Lankan Navy during the last phase of the Sri Lankan Civil War and Governor of North Western Province, Sri Lanka from 2021 to 2023.

Operation Liberation also known as the Vadamarachchi Operation was the military offensive carried out by the Sri Lankan Armed Forces in May and June 1987 to recapture the territory of Vadamarachchi in the Jaffna peninsula from the LTTE. At the time it was the largest combined services operation undertaken by the armed forces deploying multiple brigade size formation, becoming the first conventional warfare engagement on Sri Lankan soil after the end of British colonial rule. The operation involved nearly 4,000 troops, supported by ground-attack aircraft, helicopter gunships and naval gun boats. The offensive achieved its primary objective, however operations were suspended when the Indian government dropped food supplies over Jaffna in Operation Poomalai on June 4, 1987, which prompted the Sri Lankan government to accept the Indo-Sri Lankan Accord.

The Battle of Mullaitivu, also known as the First Battle of Mullaitivu and codenamed Operation Unceasing Waves-1, was a battle between the militant Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam and the Sri Lankan military during the Sri Lankan Civil War for control of the military base in Mullaitivu in north-eastern Sri Lanka.

Operation Riviresa, was a combined military operation launched by the Sri Lankan Armed Forces in Jaffna. Starting on 17 October 1995, the primary objective of the operation was the capture of the city of Jaffna and rest of the Jaffna peninsula from the LTTE. It is believed that Operation Riviresa was the largest and most successful military operation in Sri Lankan Armed Forces during the Third Eelam War.

Operation Balavegaya was a combined military operation launched by the Sri Lankan military in Jaffna, the largest amphibious assault in its history. Operation Balavegaya was launched in response to the siege of Elephant Pass by the LTTE. It is believed that Operation Balavegaya was the largest and most successful military operation of the Sri Lankan military until Operation Riviresa in 1995.

The 4th Fast Attack Flotilla is a force element flotilla of the Sri Lanka Navy. The flotilla's mission is to provide heavily armed and fast patrol boat capability to counter sea tiger movements along the coast and to protect naval and civilian shipping from sea tiger suicide crafts.

Vice admiral Susith Maliya Bandara Weerasekara RSP, VSV, USP, ndu, psn, MSc. (DS) Mgmt, DISS, DIDSS was a commissioned officer of the Sri Lanka Navy. He was the highest ranked senior officer of the Sri Lanka Navy at the time he was overlooked for the position of Commander of the Navy, leading to his subsequent retirement. A committee appointed by President Maithripala Sirisena found that he was politically victimised by the previous government and he was promoted to the rank of vice admiral in October 2015.

Rear Admiral Manil Mendis was a Sri Lankan admiral. He is the former director of naval training and former commander of the Southern Naval Area. He was promoted to the rank of rear admiral in 2015, after a committee appointed by Maithripala Sirisena, the president of Sri Lanka found that he was politically victimized in 2010.

Anthony Rohan Amarasinghe, RSP, VSV, USP, psc, MNI, SLN was a distinguished Sri Lankan admiral. He served as the Director of Naval Rapid Action Boat Squadron, Director Naval Operations, Commander Southern Naval Area (ComSouth), Director General Personnel and Training, Commander North Central Naval Area (ComNorCen), Commander Western Naval Area (ComWest) and Commander Eastern Naval Area (ComEast). He retired from the active service in 2014 upon reaching a mandatory retirement age of 55 for Sri Lankan Armed Forces Personnel. At the time of his retirement, he was the third most senior executive officer behind Commander of the Navy and the Chief of Staff.

Rear admiral Conan Anthony Mohan Jayamaha, RWP, VSV, USP, psc, SLN was a Sri Lankan Admiral. He was Commander, Northern Naval Area of the Sri Lanka Navy when he was killed from wounds sustained in a land mine explosion that killed 7 other senior military officers including Lieutenant General Denzil Kobbekaduwa in island of Kayts while making preparations for Operation Final Countdown the proposed invasion of the Jaffna Peninsula.

Attack on Colombo Harbour was a suicide attack carried out by six Black Sea Tigers of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) on Colombo Harbour, which is the primary commercial port in Sri Lanka.
