Challenges

Challenge 1: Design a Las Vegas Penthouse

The designers have 28 working hours and a $15,000 budget to design the Las Vegas penthouse where they will live during the competition.

Challenge 2: Dueling Kitchens

The designers divide into two teams and each team has to make over a kitchen.

Challenge 3: .99 Reasons to Be Creative

Each designer has a budget of $399 to decorate an empty room using items purchased at a 99-cent store.

Challenge 4: I Do--Vegas Style!

The designers have to design a wedding reception for 75 guests. After the designs are submitted, the couple will choose their favorite and least favorite designs. The designer of the least favorite will be eliminated. The remaining five will have sixteen hours to put everything together before the reception begins.

Challenge 5: Designing for a Celebrity

The remaining four designers have 24 working hours to design a guest house for Wayne Newton and his wife Kat. Then they must each record a presentation of their room to show the judges how they will act on camera.

Challenge 6: Design Star Gives Back

The three remaining designers are each randomly assigned to a deserving family chosen by HGTV to receive a $10,000 makeover of any room. Again, each must present the finished room to the judges, who will judge both the design and hosting ability. One will be eliminated, and the remaining two move on to the final challenge and the nationwide vote for the next Design Star.

Challenge 7: Island Dreams

The final two designers each have a $10,000 budget to make over a hotel suite in Hawaii. Some of the eliminated contestants return to help them out. The final Design Star will be chosen from the viewers' voting.

Top Design is an American reality television series. Interior designers competed to win cash and receive a spot in New York's Designer showcases. The first season premiered on January 31, 2007, following the season finale of Top Chef. Todd Oldham was the host, while famed potter and interior designer Jonathan Adler was lead judge. Kelly Wearstler and Margaret Russell also served as judges. Matt Lorenz was declared the winner. Although the first season received poor ratings, Bravo decided to air a second season starting September 3, 2008, with India Hicks as host and Oldham serving in the role of mentor, similar to Tim Gunn on Project Runway. Adler, Wearstler, and Russell returned as judges.

Shear Genius is an American reality television series on the Bravo network that focuses on hair styling. The show ran for three seasons, from April 2007 to April 2010. It was hosted by actress Jaclyn Smith in seasons one and two and by Brazilian model Camila Alves for season three.

They are restricted in time, materials, and theme; the resulting designs are judged and one or more designers is eliminated each week. The show was originally co-hosted by singer Kelly Rowland; she was replaced by Iman in Season 2.

The fifth season of HGTV Design Star premiered on June 13, 2010. The series returned to New York City for the new season. Clive Pearse did not return to host. Instead, Vern Yip served as both lead judge and host. Candice Olson and Genevieve Gorder both returned for their second season as judges. As part of the elimination process this season, the designers up for elimination are taped presenting their designs so the judges can evaluate their preparedness to host a series. The winner of this season was prop stylist Emily Henderson. A major change this season was that the judges decided the winner, instead of having a public vote. The winner was Antonio Ballatore, whose show The Antonio Treatment debuted in March 2010.

The final challenge involved renovating houses damaged during Hurricane Katrina and the winner was chosen in a vote open to viewers. The season premiered on January 25, 2015 and aired on STAR World. Unlike previous seasons, the competitors were celebrities competing as individuals for a grand prize of $100,000 to donate to their chosen charity. The judging panel included mentor-judge Jamie Durie, judge Andrea Savage, and head judge Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen. Production for the season was held in Phuket, Thailand, with luxury villas provided by Castlewood Group. The show is created by Riaz Mehta and produced by Imagine Group.

Ellen's Design Challenge is an American furniture design reality competition series that premiered on January 26, 2015, on HGTV. The six-episode first season was announced in April 2014, as the first cable television series executive produced by talk show host Ellen DeGeneres. In June 2015, HGTV renewed the series for a second season, that premiered on January 18, 2016.
