HMS Fox Prize was a 24-gun French privateer, Le Behringhen taken by HMS Triton on 2 May 1705. She was purchased on 19 May 1705. She was commissioned into the Royal Navy in 1705 for service in Ireland. She was wrecked in Holyhead Bay in 1706. [1] [2]

Fox Prize (actually only listed as Fox) was the fifth named ship since it was used for a 22-gun French ship captured in 1650 and expended as a fireship at Malaga in 1656. [3]

Specifications

She was captured on 2 May and purchased on 19 May 1705. Her keel for tonnage calculation of 76 feet 0 inches (23.2 metres). Her breadth for tonnage was 26 feet 0 inches (7.9 metres). Her tonnage calculation was 273 tons. Her armament was twenty 6-pounders on the upper deck with and four 4-pounders on the quarterdeck all on wooden trucks. [4]

Commissioned service

She was commissioned in 1705 under the command of Commander Henry Roach, RN for service in Ireland. [5]

Disposition

She was wrecked in Holyhead Bay on 28 August 1706 with a great loss of life including her commander. [1] [6]

HMS <i>Expedition</i> (1679) Ship of the line of the Royal Navy

HMS Expedition was a 70-gun third-rate ship of the line built at Portsmouth Dockyard in 1677/79. She was in active commission during the War of the English Succession participating in the battles of Beachy Head and Barfleur. She was rebuilt in 1699. Again, for the War of Spanish Succession she was in commission for the operation at Cadiz then returned to England where she sat for two years. She was in the Mediterranean for the Battle of Marbella in 1705. She then went to the West Indies and fought in Wager's action off Cartagena in 1708. She was rebuilt in 1709-14 to the 1706 Establishment. She spent her time split between the Baltic and as guard ship at Portsmouth before being broken at Portsmouth in 1736. She was rebuilt in 1736/40 at Deptford Dockyard.

HMS <i>Suffolk</i> (1680) Ship of the line of the Royal Navy

HMS Suffolk was a 70-gun third-rate ship of the line of the Royal Navy, built by contract of 20 February 1678 by Sir Henry Johnson at Blackwall. She participated in the War of the English Succession 1689 - 1697, in the Battles of Beachy Head and Barfleur. She was rebuilt in 1699. She was actively involved in the War of Spanish Succession 1702 - 1713. Her later career was as guard ship duties, deployments to the Baltic Sea and the West Indies. She was finally broken in 1765 after lying in Ordinary for almost twenty years.

HMS Southsea Castle was a 32-gun fifth rate built at Deptford Dockyard in 1694/95. She was assigned to the West Indies. She was wrecked along with HMS Bideford on Hispaniola in November 1699.

HMS Sun Prize was a 22-gun sixth rate taken by HMS Litchfield on 13 May 1704. She was registered as a Royal Navy Vessel on 1 July 1704. She was commissioned into the Royal Navy in 1704 for service in the English Channel. She was recaptured by a French 36-gun privateer off St Albans Head in 1708.

HMS Triton's Prize was a 30-gun French privateer, Le Royal of St Malo taken by HMS Triton on 3 February 1705. She was purchased on 3 March 1705. She was commissioned into the Royal Navy in 1705 for service in the English Channel. She went to the American colonies of New York and Virginia, remaining there until sold in 1703.

HMS Dunkirk's Prize was a 26-gun French privateer, Le Hocquart of St Malo taken by HMS Dunkirk in September 1705. She was purchased and registered on 15 November 1705. She was commissioned into the Royal Navy in 1706 for service in the West Indies. She was grounded and lost while chasing a French privateer which also went aground and was captured. She was lost in 1708.

She was recaptured in 1697 and renamed Milford. She spent some time off Africa then the West Indies. She was rebuilt in 1705. She was in the North Sea, the Mediterranean and finally the West Indies where she was wrecked in 1720.

HMS Winchelsea was a 32-gun fifth rate vessel built under contract at Redbridge (Southampton) in 1693/94. After commissioning she was employed for trade protection in the North Sea, guard ship at Plymouth, briefly with Shovell's Fleet in the Channel and a brief visit to the West Indies. While on fisheries protection in the Channel she was taken by the French off Hastings in June 1706.

HMS Fowey was a 32-gun fifth rate built by Mr. Flint of Plymouth in 1695/96. She was employed in trade protection and counter-piracy patrols in Home Waters and North America. She was in on the capture of a 50-gun Frenchman while returning from Virginia. She was taken by the French off the Scilly Islands in August 1704.

HMS Looe was a 32-gun fifth rate built by Portsmouth Dockyard in 1696/97. She was first employed off the Irish coast. She went to Newfoundland in 1702. On her return she was wrecked on the Isle of Wight in December 1705.
