Halida Hanum Akhtar is a Bangladeshi reproductive health doctor and public health expert. In 2023, she received the Begum Rokeya Padak of the government of Bangladesh for her special contribution to the establishment of women's rights. She received Bangla Academy Honorary Fellowship 2023. [1] [2] [3] [4] [5] She received the 'Developing Countries Award 1995' from the Justus-Liebig University Giessen, Germany in recognition of her contribution to improving health status of women and children. [6] As a Director-General, Family Planning Association of Bangladesh, with Haiti's Foundation for Reproductive Health and Family Education (FOSREF) has won the 2006's United Nations Population Award. Akhter received the award for her outstanding contribution to raising awareness on family planning and population issues. [7]

Career

Akhtar is the founder and director of the Reproductive Health Research Institute of Bangladesh. She served as the Director General of the largest family planning organization in Bangladesh. She worked as a senior fellow in the Department of International Health at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health on women's reproductive health. Also served as Head of USAID-DFID's NGO Health Care Project, as Head of Pathfinder International. She created a 'soil bank' for pregnant women for pregnant woman. She has played an influential role in Surjer Hashi Clinics in Bangladesh. [8] [9]

The Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur, formerly Rangpur University, is a public research university in Rangpur, Bangladesh. Founded in 2008, it is the only generally categorized university in Rangpur Division and the second public university in the region. It was named after the feminist writer and social worker Begum Rokeya.

The existing Bangladeshi honours system was created after Independence of Bangladesh. The highest civilian honours are the Independence Award and Ekushey Padak. They are awarded every year. The awards are civilian awards for a broad set of achievements in fields such as Education, Arts, Civil Service, or Social Service and Liberation War. Awards were also bestowed posthumously and they are not given for foreign citizens.

Begum Rokeya Padak, named after Begum Rokeya, is a Bangladeshi national honour conferred on individual women for their exceptional achievement. The award is given by the Ministry of Women and Children Affairs of the Government of Bangladesh. First awarded in 1995, the Rokeya Padak recognises the pioneering contribution of an individual in empowering women and raising women's issues.

Husna Banu Khanam was a Bangladeshi educationist, writer and Nazrul singer. She was a pioneer of Bengali Muslim women journalism. On that day, Bangladesh government confers Begum Rokeya Padak on individual women for their exceptional achievement.

Anannya Top Ten Awards is the prize for women in Bangladesh recognition of contribution to the fields of agriculture, industrial, trade, economics, acting, music, sports, education, liberation war, social welfare and development-work-law, human rights, entrepreneur, politics and journalism. The award is being given since 1993.
