HandEra (formally TRG) was a manufacturer, software developer, and service contractor. HandEra's business previously revolved around Palm OS, and devices running Palm OS. The company's headquarters were in Des Moines, Iowa.
At the time of their first handheld launch, the company name was TRG, an acronym for Technology Resource Group. TRG's first handheld was the TRGpro, which launched at US$329. [1] The TRGpro was made to compete with Palm, Inc.'s Palm III Series. The TRGpro ran Palm OS 3.3, and provided a competitive edge over the Palm III with a built-in loudspeaker, a faster processor, as well as a Compact Flash slot for expansion. [2] The CF card slot supported both memory expansion cards, as well as I/O accessories such as modems, network and barcode scanner cards. The TRGpro is powered by AAA batteries.
HandEra's second handheld was the Handera 330. The 330 introduced many new features which were not standard for other Palm OS devices at their time, and launched in April 2001 at US$349. [3]
The most significant innovation with the Handera 330 was the incorporation of a dynamic silk-screen area, and the Handera was the first Palm OS device to provide virtual graffiti input. On all other Palm OS devices of the time, the text input 'Graffiti' area was located within a dedicated silk-screened area. However, on the Handera 330, the LCD display region extended across the full touchable area, with the text input area instead being dynamically displayed, and could be minimised to provide greater screen area for use in supporting applications. This also enabled the ability to display a touch keyboard in the same text-input area. [4] The 330 also offered a 1.5x higher density LCD screen, featuring a QVGA (240x320) LCD resolution, which was both an increase and a deviation from the standard 160x160 screens used on most other Palm OS devices of the time.
As the 330 was also the only Palm OS device at the time to feature a QVGA screen resolution, Handera provided a free SDK to enable apps to support these features, but explicit support by the developer was required to take advantage of the higher resolution and full-screen capabilities. For all other apps lacking explicit support, the system enables the user to choose to run programs in either a 1:1 reduced size mode, or with a 1.5 software zoom. The SDK also enabled developers to offer screen rotation in their programs. [5]
In addition the 330 also featured a jog wheel (following Sony's use on the CLIE), a microphone, an internal audio amplifier, an MMC / SD slot, and a Compact Flash Type II slot. The 330 also supported various add-ons such as a Wi-Fi Card.
The 330 supports dual power options, offering the choice of either using four AAA batteries, or an optionally purchased Li-Ion battery pack. Since most similar Palm OS devices used only two AAA batteries, this enabled a significant improvement in battery life of 4–6 weeks, [6] unless consumed by the additional hardware expansion capabilities.
The device shipped with Palm OS 3.5, but a few beta versions of Palm OS 4.1 update were posted online around 2005. [7] Official updates to Palm OS 4.1 never happened due to a contract dispute with PalmSource.
The 330 was also bundled with a number of software packages, including QuickOffice (for Word/Excel compatible files), CardPro, Backup, and Chapura Pocket Mirror (syncs with Outlook). [8]
The built-in backup utility allows users to backup or restore RAM contents from an inserted memory card. Multiple backup files could be maintained on a single card.
The Handera 330 was broadly highly praised for its numerous significant innovations, [9] but was also not without criticism. The larger screen was praised for its greater size, higher text fidelity, and excellent clarity, but the flexibility promised by the dynamic silk-screen area was hampered by limited developer adoption, and was also critiqued for having a slow response rate. [10] [11] [12] By contrast, Sony's CLIE devices of the time offered an even higher 320x320 resolution, which offered a perfect 2x scaling, making backwards compatibility far easier to implement than with the Handera's strange 1.5x scaling. [5] The incorporation of extra slots and extra batteries also made the device significantly thicker and heavier than other models from Palm, like the m505 series, or the Handspring Visor Edge which both offered svelt form factors that retained expandability and extensibility. [4] It was said that the device "forgoes sex appeal in favour of significant and useful innovations" [10] and that it was "bulky and chunky". [6] The painted chrome silver finish on the plastic housing was also criticised for both appearing cheap and lacking in durability. [13] [14] As a package, the device was assessed as "a strong enterprise PDA", thanks to the included features and software bundled. [15] Finally, while the use of the standard Palm III connector made compatibility with other accessories easy, the Handera 330 was let down by only featuring slow serial-based synchronisation, rather than offering USB support like the Handspring Visor. HandEra's third handheld was the Handera 330c. It was exactly the same as the 330, except with a full 16-bit-colour screen and running Palm OS 4.1. This device never shipped, but leaked prototypes have been seen in the wild. [18] The device never shipped due to a contract dispute with PalmSource over Palm OS 4.1 licensing fees.
While no longer producing handhelds, HandEra still provides their services. Their current services include Palm OS Development, OMAP Technology, Hardware Design, Software Design, EMC Testing, Mechanical Design, and individual projects.

A personal digital assistant (PDA), also known as a handheld PC, is a multi-purpose mobile device which functions as a personal information manager. PDAs have been mostly displaced by the widespread adoption of highly capable smartphones, in particular those based on iOS and Android, and thus saw a rapid decline in use after 2007.

The Sharp Zaurus is the name of a series of personal digital assistants (PDAs) made by Sharp Corporation. The Zaurus was the most popular PDA during the 1990s in Japan and was based on a proprietary operating system. The first Sharp PDA to use the Linux operating system was the SL-5000D, running the Qtopia-based Embedix Plus. The Linux Documentation Project considers the Zaurus series to be "true Linux PDAs" because their manufacturers install Linux-based operating systems on them by default. The name derives from the common suffix applied to the names of dinosaurs.
Casio Cassiopeia was the brand name of a PDA manufactured by Casio. It used Windows CE as the Operating system. Casio was one of the first manufacturers of PDAs, developing at the beginning small pocket-sized computers with keyboards and grayscale displays and subsequently moving to smaller units in response to customer demand.
The Tungsten series was Palm, Inc.'s line of business-class Palm OS-based PDAs.
The Ruputer is a wristwatch computer developed in 1998 by Seiko Instruments, a subsidiary of the Seiko Group. In the US, it was later marketed as the onHand PC by Matsucom.
The Palm IIIc was the first color PDA made by Palm, Inc., released in February 2000 for $449USD. It ran Palm OS 3.5, the first Palm OS version to have native color support and supported paletted 8-bit color modes. Using the Palm OS Upgrade Install CD, the Palm IIIc could be updated to Palm OS 4.1. The machine has a TFT LCD that is bright indoors. The Palm IIIc features the classic III-series connector, 8MB of RAM and a 20MHz DragonBall EZI CPU. The unit also has a lithium ion rechargeable battery and a slightly modified version of the original Palm III chassis.
The Avigo 10 is a Personal Digital Assistant ("PDA") that was marketed by Texas Instruments from the years 1997 through 2000. It was sold as a lower-priced competitor to the Palm Pilot.
The Jornada was a line of personal digital assistants or PDAs manufactured by Hewlett-Packard. The Jornada was a broad product line that included Palm-Size PCs, Handheld PCs, and Pocket PCs. The first model was the 820, released in 1998, and the last was the 928 model in 2002 when Compaq and HP merged. The Jornada line was then succeeded by the more popular iPAQ model PDAs. All Jornada models ran Microsoft Operating Systems that were based on Windows CE.
The Palm m500 series of handheld personal digital assistants consisted of three devices: the Palm m500, Palm m505, and Palm m515. The series was a follow-up to the popular Palm V series with a similar, though slightly shorter, footprint and form factor.
The HTC Universal is a Windows Mobile 5.0 Pocket PC PDA manufactured by High Tech Computer Corporation. It was the first 3G/UMTS-enabled Pocket PC PDA with a telecommunications function, and also the first to come with Windows Mobile 5.0 pre-installed.
The Palm m100 series consists of four Palm OS based personal digital assistants titled m100, m105, m125, and m130. These models were intended to be "entry-level" PDAs, and therefore their cases were built from cheaper materials. Most notably, the covers of the LCD screens and the digitizers were plastic rather than glass, and the screens were smaller than the more expensive Palm devices on sale at the time.
Handspring, Inc. was an American electronics company founded in 1998 by the founders of Palm, Inc. after becoming dissatisfied with the company's direction under new owner 3Com. The company developed Palm OS–based Visor- and Treo-branded personal digital assistants. In 2003, the company merged with Palm, Inc.'s hardware division.
The Philips Nino is a so-called Palm-size PC, a predecessor to the Pocket PC platform. It was a PDA-style device with a stylus-operated touch screen. The Nino 200 and Nino 300 models had a monochrome screen while the Nino 500 had a color display. The Nino featured a Voice Control Software and Tegic T9.
Pocket PC 2000 was the first member of the Windows Mobile family of mobile operating systems that was released on April 19, 2000, and was based on Windows CE 3.0. It is the successor to the operating system aboard Palm-size PCs. Backwards compatibility was retained with such Palm-size PC applications.
The Clie NX, were a series of handheld PDAs made by Sony, their first running the Palm OS 5.0 operating system. They had a clam-shell form factor, with a vertical rotatable screen. Most of these models also had a rotatable camera built in.
The Sony Clie PEG-NZ90 was a flagship handheld PDA announced by Sony in January 2003. This model was feature-packed, further improving on the capabilities of the NX series models. Like its predecessors, this handheld had a vertical clamshell swivel-screen form factor, and was powered by a 200mhz Intel XScale CPU, running the Palm OS.
The Clié PEG-TG50 is a Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) which was manufactured by Sony, released in March 2003. Running the Palm operating system, the TG50 was notable as it featured a built-in backlit mini qwerty keyboard, in lieu of a dedicated handwriting recognition area as was the trend on most other PDAs.
