Hannah Johnson Carter was a 19th-century American art educator from the U.S. state of Maine. She served as chair of form and drawing in the College for the Training of Teachers, president of the art department of the National Education Association, and director of the art department in the Drexel Institute of Art, Science and Industry (now known as Drexel University).

Early years and education

Hannah True was born in Portland, Maine, the only child of Jonathan True and Hannah True, his wife. Carter's father was a wealthy importer and commission merchant. Her mother died young, leaving her infant daughter to the care of a devoted father who, early recognizing the artistic tastes of his child, gave her considerable training in that direction. [1]

Career

In 1868, she became the wife of Henry Theophilus Carter, a mechanical engineer and manufacturer. The marriage was happy and congenial, with wealth and high social standing. Financial losses, the failing health of her husband, the death of a child, and the loneliness of widowhood all came in quick succession, forcing her to look for ways to support herself and a child. With the life insurance left her by her husband, Carter entered the Massachusetts Normal Art School (now known as Massachusetts College of Art and Design) and was graduated with high standing. After a year's further study with private teachers in first-class studios, she went to Kingston, Canada, to direct an art school, where she succeeded in establishing the school on a permanent basis. At the close of the first year, she was obliged to return to Boston, as the climate of Canada was too severe for her health. For two years, she was associated with the Prang Educational Company, of that city, doing various work pertaining to its educational department, such as illustrating drawing-books and often acting as drawing supervisor. In the fall of 1887, she was called to New York City to take the chair of professor of form and drawing in the College for the Training of Teachers, and in 1890, she was elected president of the art department of the National Educational Association. In 1891, she was made director of the art department in the Drexel Institute of Art, Science and Industry, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Carter was appointed on many industrial, educational and art committees. She had an interest in general art education, believing enthusiastically in the necessity of educating and elevating public taste by beginning early with the training of children for a love of the aesthetic. Harriet Thayer Durgin American painter

Harriet Thayer Durgin (1843–1912) was a pioneering 19th-century American artist from the U.S. state of Massachusetts, who specialized in water colors and sketches of landscapes and still-lifes focused on botanical motifs. After studying in Paris, where she received special notice in the Salon of 1886, she shared a studio in Copley Square, Boston, with her sister, the muralist, Lyle Durgin. Durgin is remembered as one of the foremost American artists of the floral-painting genre during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Lyle Durgin

M. Lyle Durgin (1845-1904) was a 19th-century American artist from the U.S. state of Massachusetts, who specialized in portraiture and murals. A graduate of New Hampton Institute, New Hampshire, she studied art in Paris where she exhibited in the Salon. After returning to the US, she shared a studio with her sister, Harriet Thayer Durgin, in Copley Square, Boston. Durgin is remembered for designing and executing the murals at the First Congregational Church of Detroit, Michigan.

Georgine Campbell American painter

Georgine Campbell (1861–1931) was a 19th-century American painter from the U.S. state of Louisiana, specializing in miniature portrait painting. Trained in New Orleans and Paris, Campbell had the double distinction of being the first Southern woman who came to New York to make portrait painting a profession, and one who has earned a competency. When the work began to tell on her eyes, she was obliged to limit her time spent on miniatures and alternate it with larger pieces. In the present day, her portraits of Ulysses S. Grant and Henry Morrison Flagler are part of the Smithsonian's collection at the National Portrait Gallery.

Harriett Ellen Grannis Arey

Harriett Ellen Grannis Arey was a 19th-century American educator, author, editor, and publisher. Hailing from Vermont, she was one of the earliest young women who studied in a co-educational environment. In Cleveland, Ohio, she became a contributor to the Daily Herald and taught at a girls' school. After marriage, she moved to Wisconsin, and served as "Preceptress and Teacher of English Literature, French, and Drawing" at State Normal School in Whitewater, Wisconsin. After returning to Cleveland, she edited a monthly publication devoted to charitable work, and served on the board of the Woman's Christian Association. Arey was a cofounder and first president of the Ohio Woman's State Press Association. Her principal writings were Household Songs and Other Poems and Home and School Training. Arey died in 1901.

From girlhood, she took an active interest in any movement calculated to advance the interests of women. Emma Huntington Nason
