Pushpa Kamal Dahal,alias Prachanda,is a Nepalese politician currently serving as the Prime Minister of Nepal. He previously held the prime ministerial post from 2008 to 2009 as the first prime minister of the Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal,and again from 2016 to 2017.
The Nepalese rupee is the official currency of the Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal(Formally). The Nepalese rupee is subdivided into 100 paisa. Pokhara is a metropolitan city in central Nepal,which serves as the capital of Gandaki Province. It is the second most populous city of Nepal after Kathmandu,with 518,452 inhabitants living in 101,669 households in 2021. It is the country's largest metropolitan city in terms of area. The city also serves as the headquarters of Kaski District. Pokhara is located 200 kilometres west of the capital,Kathmandu. The city is on the shore of Phewa Lake,and sits at an elevation of approximately 822m. The Annapurna Range,with three out of the ten highest peaks in the world—Dhaulagiri,Annapurna I and Manaslu—is within 15–35 mi (24–56 km) of the valley.
The Nepal national football team represents Nepal in International men's football,and is governed by the All Nepal Football Association (ANFA). A member of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC),the Nepali football team plays their home games at Dasharath Stadium in Kathmandu.
Momo is a type of steamed filled dumpling,with origins from Tibet. Momo is native to Tibet,Nepal as well as Indian Himalayan Region of Ladakh,Sikkim,Assam,and Arunachal Pradesh,Himachal Pradesh,Uttarakhand,and Darjeeling. It is popular across a wider region of the Indian subcontinent. Recently,it has also hit in many international markets. Momo is similar to Chinese baozi,jiaozi,and mantou,Mongolian buuz,Japanese gyoza,Korean mandu and Turkic manti,but heavily influenced by cuisine of the Indian subcontinent with spices and herbs. Momo are extremely popular and can be found in every kind of shop from restaurants to street vendors.
Buddhism in Nepal started spreading since the reign of Ashoka through Indian and Tibetan missionaries. The Kiratas were the first people in Nepal who embraced Gautama Buddha’s teachings,followed by the Licchavis and Newar people. Buddha was born in Lumbini in the Shakya Kingdom. Lumbini is considered to lie in present-day Rupandehi District,Lumbini zone of Nepal. Buddhism is the second-largest religion in Nepal. According to 2001 census,10.74% of Nepal's population practiced Buddhism,consisting mainly of Tibeto-Burman-speaking ethnicities,the Newar. However,in the 2011 census,Buddhists made up just 9% of the country's population.
The Nepal National Cricket Team nicknamed The Rhinos and Gorkhalis,represents the country of Nepal in International cricket and is governed by the Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN). They have been an Associate Member of the International Cricket Council (ICC) since 1996. Nepal were awarded Twenty20 International (T20I) status by the ICC in June 2014 until the 2015 ICC World Twenty20 Qualifier. On 15 March 2018,Nepal gained One Day International (ODI) status for the first time,after winning the first playoff match in the 2018 Cricket World Cup Qualifier. Nepal made its maiden appearance in the ICC global event at the 2014 ICC World Twenty20 in Bangladesh. They have been participating in international matches since 1996,including every ACC Trophy tournament except 2015 ACC Twenty20 Cup in UAE,where they didn't participate. Nepal also participated in ICC World Cup Qualifier in 2001 2014 and 2018,ICC World Twenty20 Qualifier in 2012,2013 and 2015,ICC Intercontinental Cup in 2004 and 2005,ACC Fast Track Countries Tournament in 2004,2005 and 2006,ACC Twenty20 Cup in 2007,2009,2011 and 2013,Asian Games in 2010 and 2014 and ACC Premier League in 2014.
The House of Representatives,or Pratinidhi Sabha,is the one of the houses of the Federal Parliament of Nepal,with the other house being the National Assembly. Members of the House of Representatives are elected through a parallel voting system. They hold their seats for five years or until the body is dissolved by the President on the advice of the council of ministers. The house meets at the International Convention Centre in Kathmandu.
Nepalis are the citizens of Nepal under the provisions of Nepali nationality law. The country is home to people of many different national origins who are the descendants of immigrants from India,Kashmir,Central Asia,and Tibet. The term Nepalis (Nepalese) usually refers to the nationality,that is,to people with citizenship of Nepal,while the people without Nepalese citizenship but with roots in Nepal such as Nepalese Americans are strictly referred to as Nepali Speaking Foreigners who are speakers of Bhojpuri,Maithili,Nepali or any of the other 128 Nepalese languages but are now foreign citizens or of foreign nationality bearing passports and citizenship of the foreign nation. It is also not generally used to refer to non-citizen residents,dual citizens,and expatriates.
The April 2015 Nepal earthquake killed 8,964 people and injured 21,952 more. It occurred at on Saturday,25 April 2015,with a magnitude of 7.8Mw or 8.1Ms and a maximum Mercalli Intensity of X (Extreme). Its epicenter was east of Gorkha District at Barpak,Gorkha,roughly 85 km (53 mi) northwest of central Kathmandu,and its hypocenter was at a depth of approximately 8.2 km (5.1 mi). It was the worst natural disaster to strike Nepal since the 1934 Nepal–Bihar earthquake. The ground motion recorded in Kathmandu,capital of Nepal,was of low frequency,which,along with its occurrence at an hour where many people in rural areas were working outdoors,decreased the loss of property and human lives.
Nepali is an Indo-Aryan language native to the Himalayas region of South Asia. It is the official,and most widely spoken,language of Nepal,where it also serves as a lingua franca. Nepali has official status in the Indian state of Sikkim and in the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration of West Bengal. It is spoken by about a quarter of Bhutan's population. Nepali also has a significant number of speakers in the states of Arunachal Pradesh,Assam,Himachal Pradesh,Manipur,Meghalaya,Mizoram and Uttarakhand. In Myanmar it is spoken by the Burmese Gurkhas. The Nepali diaspora in the Middle East,Brunei,Australia and worldwide also use the language. Nepali is spoken by approximately 16 million native speakers and another 9 million as a second language.
The provinces of Nepal were formed on 20 September 2015 in accordance with Schedule 4 of the Constitution of Nepal. The seven provinces were formed by grouping the existing districts. The current system of seven provinces replaced an earlier system where Nepal was divided into 14 administrative zones which were grouped into five development regions.
The COVID-19 pandemic in Nepal is part of the worldwide pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019 caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2. The first case in Nepal was confirmed on 23 January 2020 when a 31-year-old student,who had returned to Kathmandu from Wuhan on 9 January,tested positive for the disease. It was also the first recorded case of COVID-19 in South Asia. Nepal's first case of local transmission was confirmed on 4 April in Kailali District. The first death occurred on 14 May. A country-wide lockdown came into effect on 24 March 2020,and ended on 21 July 2020. As of 26 July 2022,the Ministry of Health and Population (MoHP) has confirmed a total of 984,475 cases,968,802 recoveries,and 11,959 deaths in the country. In the meantime,5,804,358 real-time RT-PCR (RT-qPCR) tests have been performed in 40 laboratories across the country. The viral disease has been detected in all provinces and districts of the country,with Bagmati Province and Kathmandu being the worst hit province and district respectively. As for Nepalese abroad,as of 26 July 2020,the Non-Resident Nepali Association has reported a total of 12,667 confirmed cases,16,190 recoveries,and 161 deaths across 35 countries.
