Harry Cobden (born 5 November 1998) is a British jockey who competes in National Hunt racing. He was British Champion Conditional Jockey in 2015/16 and went on to ride as first jockey to trainer Paul Nicholls. By the end of the 2023/24 season he had won 24 Grade 1 races. He was British jump racing Champion Jockey in 2023/24.

Background

Cobden was born on 5 November 1998, the youngest of the two sons of Somerset farmers Sarah and Will Cobden, who also ran an abattoir. [1] [2] He learnt to ride as a small child and later took part in pony racing. In school holidays he worked in the yard of trainer Ron Hodges. [2] A boarder at Sexey's School, he left without taking any GCSEs and went to work with local trainer Anthony Honeyball. [2] [3]

Cobden won the men's novice point-to-point title in the 2014/15 season and won his first race under rules on 33/1 outsider El Mondo in a hunter chase at Leicester on 6 March 2015. [4] [2]

Career

At the beginning of the 2015/16 season, Cobden became conditional jockey to Paul Nicholls at Ditcheat in Somerset. He had been riding out for Nicholls in the summers since he was 13. [5] He achieved his first Grade success in November 2015, when Old Guard won the Grade 3 Greatwood Hurdle for Nicholls. [6] Irving, trained by Nicholls, provided him with his first Grade 1 victory when he won the Fighting Fifth Hurdle in November 2016. [5] Cobden was crowned champion conditional jockey at the end of the 2016/17 season. [1]

Cobden won his first Cheltenham Festival victory in the Albert Bartlett Novices' Hurdle in March 2018 on Kilbricken Storm, trained by Colin Tizzard. In April 2018, just before the Grand National meeting, he was offered the role of first jockey by both Colin Tizzard and Nicholls. Having ridden Ultragold 1 to a second consecutive victory in the Topham Chase for Tizzard and Diego Du Charmil to victory in the Maghull Novices' Chase. he decided to accept the offer for Nicholls, while continuing to ride for Tizzard. [2] [6] Soon after taking on the role as stable jockey to Nicholls, Cobden broke his C2 vertebra in a fall at Market Rasen and was sidelined for several months. [2] [7] In 2018/19, his first full season riding as stable jockey for Nicholls, he achieved four Grade 1 victories for the trainer, including the King George VI Chase on Clan des Obeaux. [6]

By the end of the 2023/24 season, Cobden had won 866 races and achieved 24 Grade 1 victories. [6] [1] He was crowned 2023/24 champion jump jockey, finishing the season seven wins ahead of Sean Bowen. [8]

Life outside racing

Cobden lives on the family farm in Somerset, where he takes an active part in raising cattle. [9] He also runs a shooting business on 13 acres of farmland. [1]

He overcame problems with alcohol, which had led to a prison sentence after a drunken incident on a plane in 2002, to resume a successful career and win the 2005 jump jockey of the year Lester Award. He won the Irish Grand National on Davids Lad in 2001, and the Scottish Grand National on Merigo in 2010 and 2012. He had eight winners at the Cheltenham Festival, the first in 1997 and the last in 2009. He recorded his 1000th win in Britain in 2010. Following an injury in a fall in 2010 he was unable to regain his licence to ride over jumps and switched codes, riding on the flat from 2015 until 2018, when he retired from race riding.

The Maghull Novices' Chase is a Grade 1 National Hunt steeplechase in Great Britain which is open to horses aged five years or older. It is run at Aintree over a distance of about 2 miles, and during its running there are twelve fences to be jumped. The race is for novice chasers, and it is scheduled to take place each year during the Grand National meeting in early April.

Colin Tizzard is a British racehorse trainer specializing in National Hunt racing. He held a full training licence from 1998 until 2022. In 2010 Tizzard trained Cue Card to victory in the Cheltenham Festival Champion Bumper. In 2014 Tizzard trained Cue Card to victory in the Ryanair Chase at the Cheltenham Festival. In the 2015 King George VI Chase he trained Cue Card to victory. At the 2016 Cheltenham Festival Thistlecrack won the World Hurdle to give Tizzard his first success in that race. At the 2018 Cheltenham Festival, Tizzard trained the winner in the Cheltenham Gold Cup Native River, as well as the winner of the Albert Bartlett Novice's Hurdle Kilbricken Storm.

Paul Townend is an Irish jockey who competes in National Hunt racing. Townend comes from Lisgoold in County Cork and is the stable jockey for Irish trainer Willie Mullins. Townend has worked for Mullins since he was just fifteen years of age, beginning his career as an apprentice flat racing jockey. He is a six-time Irish jump racing Champion Jockey. He was champion in the 2010–11, 2018–19, 2019–20, 2020–21, 2021–22, and 2022–23 seasons.

Native River is an Irish-bred, British-trained, retired Thoroughbred racehorse who raced under National Hunt rules. He was a specialist long-distance steeplechaser known for his front-running style and apparently inexhaustible stamina. He won three minor hurdle races in the 2014/15 season and started his chasing career in the 2015/16 season, winning the Worcester Novices' Chase and the Mildmay Novices' Chase. He emerged as a top-class steeplechaser in the following season when he won the Hennessy Gold Cup, Welsh Grand National and Denman Chase as well as finishing third in the Cheltenham Gold Cup. In the 2017/18 season he won a second Denman Chase before recording his biggest win in the 2018 Cheltenham Gold Cup. In the 2019/20 season he won the Many Clouds Chase and achieved a record third win in the Denman Chase. His last win came in the Cotswold Chase in February 2021 and he was retired after a disappointing run in the 2021 Welsh Grand National. He is the most recent British-trained Cheltenham Gold Cup winner.

Bryony Frost is an English National Hunt jockey from Buckfastleigh, Devon. In 2019 she became the first female jockey to win a Grade 1 race at the Cheltenham Festival.

Rachael Blackmore MBE is an Irish jockey who competes in National Hunt and flat racing. In 2021, she became the first female jockey to win the Grand National in the 182-year history of the race. She also became the first woman to be leading jockey at the Cheltenham Festival with six victories, including the Champion Hurdle, in 2021. The following year she became the first female jockey to win the Cheltenham Gold Cup.

Politologue is a French-bred racehorse who competed in National Hunt racing. After winning one race in his native country he was sent to race in England and won two Novice Hurdle races in the 2015/16 season. In the following season he began to compete in steeplechases and won three races including the Noel Novices' Chase. In his next campaign he emerged as a top-class chaser over two and two and a half miles as he recorded victories in the Haldon Gold Cup, Tingle Creek Chase, Desert Orchid Chase and Melling Chase. He won the 1965 Chase in November 2018 but failed to win again for eighteen months before gaining his biggest win in the 2020 Champion Chase. In December 2020 he won the Tingle Creek Chase for a second time. It was to be his final victory and he was retired in March 2022 after a further four starts.

Harry Skelton is a British jockey who competes in National Hunt racing. Skelton was the 2020–2021 British Champion Jump Jockey.
