Hasan Imam Khan,also known as Sohel Hazari,is a Bangladesh Awami League politician and a former Member of Parliament from Tangail-4. [1] He is the former chairman of Kalihati upazila. [2]
Hasan Imam Khan was a leader of Bangladesh Chhatra League. He was also a leader of Bangladesh Awami Swechasebak League. He served as the chairman of Kalihati upazila. [3] As chairman in 2011 he helped resolve a dispute between Bangladesh Army officers and Bangladesh Awami League men during a mayoral election. Awami League men were allegedly beaten by Army personnel which caused Awami League personnel to lay seize office of the returning officer of Bangladesh Election Commission. The officers involved were withdrawn after a meeting between officers in Shahid Salahuddin Cantonment in Ghatail and Khan. [4] He worked as the organising secretary of Bangladesh Chhatra League. [5]
Khan was nominated by Bangladesh Awami League to contest the by-elections on 10 November 2015 in Tangail-4. The seat became vacant after the Member of Parliament Abdul Latif Siddique resigned on 1 September 2015. [6] The election was delayed over a legal case on the candidacy of Abdul Kader Siddique,President of Krishak Sramik Janata League. On 18 January 2018,the Bangladesh Supreme Court upheld the verdict cancelling Abdul Kader Siddique's candidacy paving the way for Bangladesh Election Commission to hold the by-elections on 31 January 2017. [7] [8] He was elected to Parliament after winning the by-elections. [9]
Tangail is a district (zila) in the central region of Bangladesh. In 1969,Tangail district was created by Tangail Mohokuma from its 237 square kilometers of land and 3177 square kilometers of land acquired from Mymensingh district. It is the largest district of Dhaka division by area and second largest by population. The population of Tangail zila is about 4 million and its area is 3,414.28 square kilometres (1,318.26 sq mi). The main city of the district is Tangail. It is surrounded by Jamalpur District on the north,the Dhaka and Manikganj Districts on the south,the Mymensingh and Gazipur on the east,and the Sirajganj on the west.
Abdul Kader Siddique is a Bangladeshi politician. He served as a Mukti Bahini member and organizer of the Bangladesh Liberation War. He fought with an estimated 17,000-strong guerrilla force in the Tangail region against the Pakistan Army. The army was called Kaderia Bahini. At the end of the war in 1971,Siddique's forces entered Dhaka along with the Indian forces,signaling the end of the war. He was awarded Bir Uttom by the Government of Bangladesh. Since 1999,he has been serving as the leader of his newly formed party,the Krishak Sramik Janata League.

According to a Dhaka-based human rights group Odhikar,at least 402 people have become victim of enforced disappearance from 2009 to 2017 under the current Awami League administration. These incidents along with extrajudicial killings in Bangladesh has been criticized by The United Nations and human rights groups including Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International. Rapid Action Battalion (RAB),a special paramilitary unit in Bangladesh,is alleged to be behind most of these disappearances even though RAB claimed these allegations to be false. The current Awami League government denies involvement in these forced disappearances even when victims later surface in custody.
