Hatuey is a beer from Cuba originally produced in the Modelo Brewery of the Bacardi family.
Hatuey was first brewed in 1927 in Santiago de Cuba. It was the country's first premium beer. [1] Bacardi's Enrique Schueg had hired a German brewer to elaborate the drink. [2] Hatuey was a respected figure within the Baccardi family, Emilio Bacardi had described the Indian chief as "the first martyr to die for Cuba". [3]
From the 1920s to the 1960, the beer was the most-drunk by the US Marine Corps serving in the Caribbean, and was frequently mentioned in the magazine Leatherneck. During the Second World War, members of the 13th Defense Battalion based in Cuba created the "Chief Hatuey Drinking Club". [4]
Equally attractive to the sailors [and Marines] was the beer… Hatuey… It was a local brew with the profile of an Indian on the label. Referred to as the “one-eyed Indian” it was the preferred beverage of the fleet. It was also well known when drinking it, if the Indian suddenly appeared to have two eyes, it was time to start drinking more and faster!
Its production grew after the 1948 opening of the Modelo Brewery in Cotorro, Havana. [2] In 1960, Fidel Castro confiscated the Modelo Brewery and the production of Hatuey. The Bacardi family fled the country and abandoned the production of the Hatuey beer. [5]
In 1996, Bacardi revived the Hatuey beer, mainly thanks to the brewmaster Eduardo McCormick who had worked at the Modelo Brewery and had written down everything about the brewery and the recipe after fleeing Cuba in the 1960s. [5] In 1998, Bacardi announced it was turning Hatuey into a specialty beer instead of a Cuban product. [6]
In 2011, Bacardi announced the relaunch of the brand as a microbrew. [7] [8] In 2012, the Bacardi family hired a brewmaster to recreate the Hatuey beer. [2] After relaunching in South Florida exclusively, the brand was launched in New York in 2014. [1] [9] The professional dancer Camille Arroyo became the brand ambassador. [10]

Hatuey, also Hatüey was a Taíno Cacique (chief) of the Hispaniola province of Guahaba. He lived from the late 15th until the early 16th century. One day Chief Hatuey and many of his fellow-men traveled from present-day La Gonave, Haiti by canoe to Cuba to warn the indigenous people that were in Cuba about the Spaniards that were coming to Cuba. He later attained legendary status for leading a group of natives in a fight against the invasion of the Spaniards, thus becoming one of the first fighters against Spanish colonialism in the New World. He is celebrated as "Cuba's first national hero." The 2010 film Even the Rain includes a cinematic account of Hatuey's execution.

History of beer in Mexico dates from the Spanish conquest of the Aztec Empire. While Mesoamerican cultures knew of fermented alcoholic beverages, including a corn beer, long before the 16th century, European style beer brewed with barley was introduced with the Spanish invasion soon after Hernán Cortés's arrival. Production of this beer here was limited during the colonial period due to the lack of materials and severe restrictions and taxes placed on the product by Spanish authorities. After the Mexican War of Independence, these restrictions disappeared, and the industry was permitted to develop. Furthermore, the arrival of German immigrants during the ephemeral Second Mexican Empire of elected Maximilian I of Mexico, born an Austrian archduke, in the 19th century provided the impetus for the opening of many breweries in various parts of the country.

The place at which beer is commercially made is either called a brewery or a beerhouse, where distinct sets of brewing equipment are called plant. The commercial brewing of beer has taken place since at least 2500 BC; in ancient Mesopotamia, brewers derived social sanction and divine protection from the goddess Ninkasi. Brewing was initially a cottage industry, with production taking place at home; by the ninth century, monasteries and farms would produce beer on a larger scale, selling the excess; and by the eleventh and twelfth centuries larger, dedicated breweries with eight to ten workers were being built.
