Hayball is an Australian architectural practice with studios in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane offering architecture, interior design and urban planning services. Hayball works include residential, commercial, education and institutional projects, as well as urban design. The practice currently employs approximately 170 staff.
The practice was established in 1983 [1] as Hayball Leonard Stent and re-branded as Hayball in early 2008. The firm is led by seven directors - Len Hayball, Richard Leonard, Robert Stent, Tom Jordan, Sarah Buckeridge, Luc Baldi and Ann Lau. Currently, Tom Jordan is managing director. [2]
Hayball is a multi-award-winning practice, including the Australian Institute of Architects' Award for Residential Architecture and the Melbourne Prize for the redevelopment of the Canada Hotel on Swanston Street, Carlton. She emerged in the public spotlight in 2000 because of the controversial 'Newman House', located in St Kilda, designed for media and football identity Sam Newman. The Dimity Reed Melbourne Prize (Architecture) is awarded annually by a jury appointed by the Victorian chapter of the Australian Institute of Architects to projects that have made a significant contribution to the civic life of Melbourne, Australia. It was first awarded in 1997 to Six Degrees Architects for the small bar Meyers Place. The winner is drawn from direct-entry categories in the annual Victorian Architecture Awards, and any project located within the Urban Growth Boundary of the Melbourne metropolitan area is eligible for consideration for the prize which can be drawn from any category in the awards.
