Heidi Ploeg

Heidi-Lynn Ploeg (born 1965) [1] is a Canadian biomechanical engineer, a professor in the Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering and Chair for Women in Engineering at Queen's University at Kingston in Ontario. [2] Her research involves the biomechanics of bone and bone implants, and the use of motion capture in biomedical applications.

Education and career

Ploeg was a student of mechanical engineering at Queen's University. She earned a bachelor's degree there in 1988, and a master's degree in 1991. From 1992 to 2002 she worked as a researcher and project manager for Centerpulse Orthopedics, a Swiss company in Winterthur; during this time she continued her studies at Queen's University, and completed a Ph.D. in 2000. From 2003 to 2018 she worked at the University of Wisconsin–Madison as an assistant and associate professor of mechanical engineering. In 2018 she returned to Queen's University as an associate professor, and in 2022 she was promoted to full professor. [3] [4] She was named as the inaugural Queen's Chair for Women in Engineering in 2020. [4] [5]

Recognition

Ploeg was named as an ASME Fellow in 2021, [6] and as a Fellow of the Orthopaedic Research Society in 2024. [7]

Gordana Vunjak-NovakovicFRSC is a Serbian American biomedical engineer and university professor. She also heads the laboratory for Stem Cells and Tissue Engineering at Columbia University. She is part of the faculty at the Irving Comprehensive Cancer Center and the Center for Human Development, both found at Columbia University. Tanner developed HAPEX, a bone mineral composite biomaterial, which was used in over half a million middle ear transplants in the 1990s.

Beth Ann Winkelstein is the Deputy Provost and the Eduardo D. Glandt President’s Distinguished Professor at the University of Pennsylvania. Winkelstein has established an active research program that is recognized for elucidating the mechanisms of subfailure cervical spine injuries and the cellular events surrounding the etiology of chronic pain. She is Blue and Gold Distinguished Professor of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Delaware, adjunct professor of orthopaedic surgery at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, and the former president of the Biomedical Engineering Society.

Jonathan Jeffers is a mechanical engineer and Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Imperial College London. He was awarded a Research Professorship by the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR), the first engineer to receive this award. His research focuses on improving surgical treatment of osteoarthritis.

Jill Startzell Higginson is an American biomechanical engineer and an expert on gait. Her research involves the observation of gait, the contributions of different muscles to gait, and the diagnosis of muscular problems involving gait. She is George W. Laird Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Delaware, and the head of the university's Neuromuscular Biomechanics Lab.
