Bernd Heinrich Wilhelm von Kleist was a German poet,dramatist,novelist,short story writer and journalist. His best known works are the theatre plays The Prince of Homburg,Das Käthchen von Heilbronn,The Broken Jug,Amphitryon and Penthesilea,and the novellas Michael Kohlhaas and The Marquise of O. Kleist died by suicide together with a close female friend who was terminally ill.

Heinrich Harrer was an Austrian mountaineer,explorer,writer,sportsman,geographer,and briefly SS sergeant. He was a member of the four-man climbing team that made the first ascent of the North Face of the Eiger,the "last problem" of the Alps,in July 1938. Harrer and the team flew the Nazi flag atop the mountain. Harrer had joined the Nazi Party shortly after the annexation of Austria in March 1938,and was personally received by Hitler after the climb. A year later in 1939,he and the climbing team went on an expedition to the Indian Himalayas,where they were arrested by British colonial authorities due to the outbreak of World War II. He eventually escaped to Tibet,staying there until 1951 and never seeing active combat from that point onwards. He wrote the books Seven Years in Tibet (1952) and The White Spider (1959).
Prince Frederick Henry Ludwig of Prussia was a Prussian general,statesman,and diplomat. He was a son of King Frederick William I of Prussia and Princess Sophia Dorothea of Hanover,and the younger brother of Frederick the Great. Prince Henry led Prussian armies in the Silesian Wars and the Seven Years' War,having never lost a battle in the latter. In 1786,he was suggested as a candidate to be a monarch in the United States.

Archduke Ludwig Viktor Joseph Anton of Austria was the youngest child of Archduke Franz Karl of Austria and his mother Princess Sophie of Bavaria,and the younger brother of Emperor Franz Joseph I. He had a military career,as was usual for archdukes,but did not take part in politics. He was openly homosexual and declined to marry princesses who were sought for him. He is well-known for his art collection and patronage as well as philanthropy.

It is based on Austrian mountaineer and Schutzstaffel (SS) sergeant Heinrich Harrer's 1952 memoir of the same name,about his experiences in Tibet between 1944 and 1951. The story is set in Berlin in 1810 and 1811,and follows the German writer Heinrich von Kleist and his lover Henriette Vogel in the final stages of their lives. It was screened in the Un Certain Regard section at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival.
